I haven't written anything in a while! I have tons of ideas, but real life seems to be getting in the way; and then when I do sit down to write, nothing really comes out right. It's like the words are choking.
So here's the plan to break out of this:
- Comment here with a character or a pairing, and five words/short prompts.
- I will write one

Cid told her to bind up her hair and just not talk much: if they didn't know she was a girl, they wouldn't make fun of her any more. It gave her a reputation -- cold, detached, anti-social -- but once she'd taken her hair down again, she appreciated the reputation even more, because she was a general now.
2. Cold
"Which one do you want?" Cid asked, as she pressed her fingers up against the shimmering tanks. "We need to choose the best one, so if one feels different than another, you need to let me know."
The first tank burnt her; the second buzzed slightly under her touch, as if it were alive. The third was cold, and soothing, and as her fingers numbed against it, she said softly: "This one."
3. Unflinching
"Again," she snaps, even though she is bone-weary and her sword is heavier than the sacred Goddesses. "I will master this."
Leo says nothing, but the pride and respect in his eyes gives her the tiny bit of strength she needs to continue.
4. Shine
Locke drops it in her lap casually, but Celes notices that the blade on the tiny ornamental knife has been buffed to a shine -- and sharpened.
"For free," he says, even more casually. "I won't use it -- would you?"
5. Soft
She's terribly surprised when the cat jumps into her lap -- she didn't even know Locke had a cat -- and her general's-training hasn't taught her how to deal with things that are small and furry. She tentatively moves her hand towards it, and is rewarded with a fierce headbutt and a tiny rolling purr, like the motors on the airship.

1. Feathers
"It'll be okay," she tells Zell, who is still sniffling; "It's just a broken wing." They make a box, with a blanket in the bottom and half of Zell's biscuit and a saucer full of water, and set the bird in gently. Zell gives it an awkward pet on the head and then runs off to play again.
Later that night, when Edea cannot sleep and is wandering, she sees the poor thing has died. The thought breaks her heart, and she finds herself casting the magic she swore to never use, Life and Cure after each other: breaking her own word for a poor broken bird.
In the morning, they set the bird free, but she cannot meet Zell's eyes.
2. Cookies
This is the moment she finally knows she will be alright: Quistis, and Selphie, full-grown and in uniform, presenting a plate full of something wretched and burnt and foul-smelling with such tentative smiles on their faces that she can't help but smile back.
3. Ocean
She isn't surprised when Seifer shows up one day in a small motorboat; she'll always know where he is, now, even separated by that much space and air and water.
4. Power
She was afraid to use it until it was too late -- if only she'd learned to control it, might she have fought the witch off?
5. Dance
She feels awkward at the party, since everyone there now knows who she is and what she was; when Zell tries to invite her to the dance floor, she shakes her head, and smiles.

They're surprised to learn that Zell isn't even still when he sleeps -- surprised, and disgruntled; Selphie says it's cute, but Selphie slept on the other side of the tent.
2. Burn
"You lost, now pay up," Seifer says, and Zell grits his teeth but puts his arm out; he feels the handful of Fire spells slide along his veins, burning like cigarette butts, as Seifer Draws them out.
3. Freeze
"Stop right there, young man." Ma Dincht's voice is frighteningly soft in the darkness. "Just where do you think you're sneaking off to at this hour of the night?"
4. Strawberries
This is the second time he's seen Quistis in the hall with a strawberry sundae; after fifteen minutes of following her, begging and pleading and singing her praises at the top of his lungs, Zell learns that the Instructor Break Room has an ice cream machine and briefly contemplates a career in education.
5. Letters
The words aren't coming out right -- he's never been good at writing down his thoughts -- so he thinks, the hell with this, I'll deliver Edea's care package in person.

"White, of course," Kiros says smoothly, and the woman behind the bar - Raine - laughs.
"Now I definitely believe you two know each other," she says, pulling out three glasses and a bottle of wine that looks local. "Laguna's the only man I've ever met who prefers white to red."
2. Breath
He takes a deep breath - and then lets it all out, loudly: cursing the army, cursing Galbadia, cursing the Sorceress, and cursing that crazy Laguna for this stupid, ridiculous plan, and terrible idea. Then he takes another breath... and jumps off the cliff.
3. Water
Laguna's drunk again, so Kiros flags the waitress down and orders some water; it would be helpful if Laguna could make it to the room this time before taking his pants off.
4. Fall
Esthar is such a strangely beautiful place, but Kiros finds that he misses the seasons; the only trees here are in the Palace, and they don't change colour or lose their leaves.
5. Food
"Well, we could eat the dragon," Laguna says slowly, and Kiros almost hits him before he realizes just how hungry he actually is.

1. Snow
The Feymarch is so warm. Rydia's not used to the heat (or the loneliness), and she spends her first week alone in her small room, tapping her old Ice Rod against the wall and gently fingering the tiny pile of snowflakes it makes.
2. Bubbles
She goes out, once, with Leviathan, when she turns fifteen; all she remembers of it is a long stream of bubbles and the brightness of a sun she hadn't seen in almost ten years.
3. Solid
She watches Rosa and Cecil out of the corner of her eye, noting how they lean on each other, and thinks: I want something like that.
4. Clean
There's nothing quite like another clean shining house rising up from the ashes, Rydia thinks: empty and sparkling, full of promise. (And this time, made of stone.)
5. Laughter
Before Edge, she'd never met anyone who could make her laugh as hard; she'd never met anyone who could make her as angry, either.

He almost wishes Cecil weren't so strong and bloody efficient, because he'd wanted to hear Lugae beg for his life -- he'd wanted to make the doctor bleed, make him cry, make him apologize for what he'd done to Edge's parents.
2. Sun
Eblan's crest was always the setting sun, symbolizing the move into night and the ninja tradition: Edge changed it to the rising sun, for Eblan's new age. It meant he didn't have to actually change the sigil at all, but got to spout off a lot of important-sounding crap at regal dinner parties.
3. Challenge
"Then spar me, you traitorous bastard," Edge hisses. "Or are you afraid my blade guard's gonna slip?"
Kain's eyes narrow, and his fingers clench the long slender spear beside him. "I welcome it," he says, closing the visor on his helm, and Edge is pretty sure he means it.
4. Fierce
He'd never met anyone quite as fierce as this little slip of a green-haired girl -- although when he tried to call her that, she'd burnt off his eyebrows and stomped on his toes.
5. Patience
"If you could just wait for the rest of us to get there," Rosa says with a sigh as she binds his arm, "you wouldn't get so beat up all the time."

It's his first morning as King, and all Edgar can do is stand there naked and dripping, staring at The Royal Closet and wondering whether he has anything to wear to the throne that isn't covered in polymer and motor oil.
2. Blanket
"It'll burrow under the sand," Edgar says, his eyes alight. "The sand will just close over our heads and tuck us right into the ground."
3. Sunrise
He's watched sunrises with millions - well, thousands - hundreds - well, okay, with a few girls. But now the only sunrise he can remember is the sun that rose the day before they left for the Floating Continent -- the last time he saw the sun in a sky clear of haze and pollution and regrets.
4. Stars
"Your eyes are as beautiful as the stars," he murmurs, "and your - your magic is as bright as the-"
"Hey!" Locke calls suddenly. "You'd better not be writing bad poetry again. My ears can't take it!"
5. Bed
Once it was a place for amusement; now, Edgar collapses in exhaustion, and realizes that he is officially getting old.
