Summary:
It had always been strange for her, coming to Baron, because she couldn't help it. She'd watch Cecil, mostly out of the corner of her eye but sometimes (when she thought she could handle it) dead-on. Cecil had been her childhood hero - he'd been the Knight who saved her from the fire; it had never been his fault - and even though she'd outgrown the childhood, the hero worship was still there, rumbling just under the surface like a current she couldn't stop. It had grown out of grateful memories and ten years of obsessive black-magic training and it was like a fire now, really, a little out of control.
Rydia thought she loved him sometimes, the way she idolized his every move: he and Rosa were so perfect together, but it wasn't just him and Rosa being perfect. She had always looked up to him - and now she just looked at him, across the room, when she could.
She'd watch him with his wife and wonder if she herself could ever be perfect like Rosa. She'd throw a glance his way in the middle of the ball and wonder whether he ever grew jealous as she danced with Edge, though she knew he didn't. Sometimes she'd look him in the eye in the midst of a conversation, trying to see herself reflected: did he still see a young girl, raised by monsters, lost and found, with too much spirit and heart and not enough patience?
She didn't really love him, she thought sometimes: it was just an obsession, an idolation she'd grow out of eventually, a fever that hit her every night she spent under Baron's roof. Eventually the fire would fade. For now, she watched Cecil, and wondered to herself.
