You said you'd be home in time for fall,
but it's December and you've sent no word.
I waited outside your house
hoping you'd let me in,
but I just stood there by the sidewalk.
Nothing new.
You said everything would be fine by the first snowfall
but everyone is spring cleaning, and things are still broken.
I looked into your window
hoping to catch your eye
but all I saw was dark.
Just like always.
You said you'd be back with July's sun,
but the rusted leaves have fallen and nothing else has changed.
I stared at your doorway and knocked,
but no one came.
I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up.
Then, it was October, and you never promised anything.
This time you came back home to me
but I can't see you.
I already kept my promise to you,
because I know you heard me when I said,
"I'm not coming back."
