I'm ONCE AGAIN back from the field. Damn, I'm out there a lot... oh well, I can't wait to get the eff out of here. Iraq is better than this shit!
I got dropped off in the 7 ton to days ago. Me and one other Marine. They dropped us off, threw out 2 5 gallon water jugs, and 6 MRE's and said "alright, see you in 2 days!" and hauled off.
Sitting in the desert 2 days straight with one other person could drive a man insane. Luckily I'm smart enough to cut this insanity off at the pass, and brought my MP3 player, a book, and one of my correspondance courses. I've found the less you talk to someone you're stuck with for 2 days the better... you see, you only have so much to talk about to another human being, and after that's exhausted, the only other recourse you have is to grapple the other person until you both die and vultures pick at your remains. I did not want this to be the outcome of my little jaunt to the desert.
Got to commune with nature. Those coyotes out there have balls. They got about 20 feet from where we were sleeping. The Iowa farm boy i was with was freaking out about 3 AM:
"Hey Albert! Wake up!"
"What?" I say in a groggy tone
"Those coyotes, they're right there!"
"I'm trying to sleep..."
"Albert! They're right there!"
"Shut the fuck up...." I go back to sleep.
I was up later that night on radio watch... laying on my back, watching shooting stars when... SWOOP a freaking bat flew over about a foor away from my nose.... FUCK that scared the crap out of me. I don't have a fear of bats... but when something glides over your head that close, and you don't expect it, it freaks you out.
It was also comforting to know that earlier that day I found unexploded mortar rounds about 20 feet from where we were sleeping.
I finished reading Art of War, it was a good thing to read before I left. Gives you a good sense of the big picture. I never thought there was benevolence in modern warfare until now.
