The show would start in twenty minutes. Sophie was supposed to have been here ten minutes ago, and Jilly was distressed. How could she be sure she wasn't covered in paint if her best friend wasn't here to check for hidden flecks? Jilly never meant to show up places covered in paint, but somehow she always seemed to. From the studio to class to her waitressing job, someone always pointed out even the tiniest fleck.
Sighing, Jilly took one final look in the mirror and noticed no paint on her at all. At least, not on her front. She'd have to get Sophie to check her back, and her hair. At least she could make sure her shoes were clean before Sophie got here, though.
Thinking of her shoes, however, led her to realize that she was still wearing her old Chucks, not the nice black flats she'd meant to put on. "Bother," she said, flinging open her closet door. "I mean, I know it's only a student show, but I'd like to at least try and look neat and clean, if nothing else. And ratty brown Chucks won't make any kind of an impression at all."
She reached into her closet, feeling for the shoes she wanted. Not finding them, she sighed again and stepped inside, thinking they might be further in, as her closet was longer than its doors.
The sudden light, though, was a surprise.
