I read somewhere a while ago about science papers being better-respected if they had a bloke’s name on them than a woman’s name, something also brought up in
this post about science fiction/fantasy stories.
I’ve never had a paper submitted to anywhere so I have no first-hand experience of this, but I always understood that the anonymous revision process was, uh, anonymous. It would appear that lack of anonymity (especially in really specialised fields with few equivalent peers for any author) would have serious effects on the science as well as the demographic of the published authors.
Is this not the case? Is it really only the referees that are anonymous? Or are these anecdotes referring to something else?
