DO THE MATH…

Good Morning America's Charles Gibson interviewed two very attractive and seemingly intelligent mother-daughter teams and questioned their opting to give breast enlargement surgery for their daughter’s graduation present.

Now I am sure that being interviewed on television, live in New York, would make you nervous trying to get your views out there and with the short time the interview took place, I imagine the mother-daughters, would want to plead their case in an intelligent and straightforward manner. HOWEVER, I listened to each side, Mr. Gibson asked excellent questions; don’t you think this is excessive, Did you or did your mother bring up the suggestion that you should have your breast "enhanced", did you do this to attract boys, what about the potential health risks, future breast feeding...Etc. etc. Without getting into too personal and emotional arena the girls answered the questions nervously and to what I imagine was the best of their abilities, I listened to each response. I am unconvinced that this surgery is even necessary. These were both very attractive girls. One had the surgery already performed and the second was waiting for her scheduled appointment.

Why would the mother’s do this? Well, their reasons were that each girl (both being "good" girls according to moms) worked hard in their lives (18 is so trying an age dontcha think) and they said the daughters did a lot of the research (they did not go into what KIND of research. Does getting QUOTES for the best boob job count as research?) and because one of the mothers has had plenty of work done on herself, they thought that the girls were too unhappy with their own figures (the one GOD gave them) and, please let’s not forget to mention the daughter’s friends were getting breast reductions and nose jobs, the mothers felt that this was the best graduation present they could give.

I'll tell you, our world has spun off and gone astray, and our world has lost a piece of its soul. It saddens me that a young girl of 18 would allow someone to mutilate and maim her young body to boost her "self esteem". A young woman that doesn’t even know her full potential as a WOMAN yet is going under the knife to introduce foreign objects inside her skin, just to have bigger boobs. Why Bigger boobs? What kind of world do we live in? I think that our consumer driven lives and our coma induced needs to buy MORE new things, because now we can OWN everything, pre disposes our bodies as the next SHOPPING MALL marketing targets. One of the reasons the mothers gave, justifying to have this surgery done was “So you can look better in pictures” Our godless mental states have stolen forever our future innocence. I guess having a “boob job” is less expensive than buying a brand new car; insurance, tags, maintenance, and gas. I mean, “Hey, you could die in a car accident, couldn’t you”?

A question keeps drumming in my head, what are those boobs hiding for you? Will your mom keep you on her health plan 10 years from now when the darn things start to leak and you have zapped your nervous systems beyond repair?

Is the “boob” job going to be our “tradition” that we will pass down to our daughters? Would the mother’s have been more opened to a graduation present of “full body” tattoos? In some third world countries the village women, with the help of the mother’s, condone the castration of the young girls because it is a tradition. The old grandmothers even help hold the girls down.

Some say this is the “sign” of our times. I guess I must be getting’ pretty OLD and closed minded these days. Mother’s and Daughter’s have come a long way over the centuries. Women have rights now; they don’t have “arranged” marriages anymore. Women can vote and own property. Women are able to be educated and employed with all the rights of every citizen in these United States. Women are a force to be dealt with and can still birth babies at the same time.

I turned 18 in 1977. I thought the girls that got a college education paid for by their parents were “privileged” I thought the girls that were given a Europe vacation for graduation were “privileged” I thought the girls that knew what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives at 18 were “fortunate” Today, I think the girls that get a “boob job” for a graduation present are the “privileged unfortunates” and some days I wish I didn’t know how to “do the math”
