Summary: Juri visits Iruka after work to borrow his shower and for study help, they go to eat and he walks her home.
Warnings: Math - specifically Trig. Read at your own risk.
Juri: Juri stared at the notice from her landlord and pulled out her phone. The coat was long and covered most of her at least. She had her bag with her school uniform, homework and spare clothes in it as she hurried to the Katsu building. Worse care to worse, she'd risk sneaking into one of the empty apartments. Hitting the button to dial Iruka's number, she bit her lip, pulling the scarp a little tighter to her face, Her face was clear of paint, but every other square inch of her body was covered. She just hoped he'd answer and say yes.
Iruka: Iruka rolled off the couch from where he'd been studying spices. Picking up the phone back in his bedroom he answered. "Hello."
Juri: Naturally being a happy person, Juri smiled. "Umino-san. I was wondering if I could ask you a smal favor?" She sounded really hopeful as she hurried the last block to get to the building.
Iruka: Iruka wondered what could be wrong. "Of course, what is it, Juri-san?"
Juri: "There seems to have been a little accident at my apartment building while I was away and we're without electricity and I really need to find someplace to wash some paint off." She hated asking for favors, but she really had to, "And I am really sorry I am running late, I just hadn't expected some things today."
Iruka: "It's no problem. Please, come over. You can use my shower." Iruka moved into the hall closet to grab an extra towel to put in the bathroom.
Juri: "Thank you so much, I really appreciate this. I'll be there in a few minutes." She quickly hung up the phone as she crossed the street, moving very carefully since she was still in her work outfit and the heels required care, even for someone as used to them as she was. Hurrying into the building she adjusted her bag as she reached the correct floor and walked down the hall to knock on Iruka's door. the coat covered all of her. Her hands were in gloves, but her feet were in very high heeled white vinyl boots that disappeared under the coat. Her hair covered the paint on her neck, so she didn't look too obviously different, except the 5'11" girl was wearing 5" heels.
Iruka: Iruka opened the door. At 5'10" his eyelevel was somewhere between her lips and her chest when she was in the heels. He looked up a bit to meet her eye to eye. "Juri-san, Come in." He stepped aside, holding the door for her.
Juri: Smiling and walking into the room, she smiled as she unzipped the boots. The very tall boots. She set down her bag, "Thank you so much for this. If I would have tried to wash off this much paint in cold water I would have gotten sick for sure." Taking off the long coat and scarf showed that only the paint on her hands and face was gone. The rest of her rather exposed body was covered in green and blue and silver in a scale pattern, The shiny silver top barely qualified as a top and the silver skirt was booth babe levels of short.
Iruka: Iruka swallowed hard, forcefully dragging his eyes to stare at the corner. His voice almost had a slight rasp in it when he spoke, but it was hard to tell. "It's no trouble. We don't want you getting sick." He coughed lightly, turning down the short hall to the bathroom.
Juri: Picking up her bag, she padded after him down the hall. "Thank you so much for this. I didn't want to call my manager for help and I wasn't sure who else I could ask." She had been dressed like this all weekend, so she didn't think anything of it. The outfit was bigger than a bikini after all and she was comfortable enough in one of those. "At least I got my check before leaving today. And I got sixth place for favorite bad girl so that was extra money."
Iruka: Iruka held the door open for her as he stared at the frame. Why couldn't Juri have taken the coat off in the bathroom? Now he knew he was going to be distracted the whole time she was here. Even if she put the coat back on after getting changed. "You look good." That was an understatement. He couldn't help but wonder what the other five girls looked like. No, he shouldn't go there not when he had a guest, maybe later. "You should have won first." He gave her a warm smile, staring over her left ear. He really hoped she didn't notice how wound up he was getting. As soon as she was gone he could take a deep breath and relax. That paint looked like it would take a good 45 minutes to wash off that would be a good 45 minutes he could spend staring at his text books. They always worked wonderfully when he was fool enough to read while Tatsuki was home. He didn't do that often though.
Juri: Juri was very good at cleaning and was able to scrub the paint off much faster than that. Also taking this opportunity to wash her hair and dry it really quick she brushed it back into a pony tail. She had packed normal clothes though in her backpack. About 30 minutes later she left the bathroom, this time wearing jeans that had pink glitter to them and white sweatshirt with the Kanji for Cute written on the front. Her bag was in her hand as she walked down the hallway looking for Iruka.
Iruka: Iruka was in his room studying hard. He'd calmed down substantially, but he could still feel his heart rate was up at least a little bit. He'd left the door open so he could hear if Juri needed something and he could be easily found when she was done. He was so involved in studying his mind back to earth he hadn't noticed the water coming off or Juri padding around looking for him.
Juri: Finding him in his room she knocked on the door frame, a few pieces of teal hair hanging in front of her face. "Iruka-senpai? Thank you." She was smiling, "That feels soo good to get that off after walking around in paint for three days. Did you still want to study?"
Iruka: Iruka looked up, smiling. "If you don't have anything else. That would be great. Did you bring your books?" Iruka wanted to take a quick look through the material they were studying so he could give a better lesson.
Juri: "Uh huh. I have everything in here." She gestured at her bag. "Waiting to hear from a friend of mine to camp out at her place tonight. Since mine doesn't have electricity, so I have everything with me." She pulled out her math book from the bag. There were various colored post it notes in very girly colors stuck in the book to mark important parts. "One of the game designers was helping me a little bit when I had breaks this weekend too."
Iruka: "That's good. Studying daily is the best way to learn." Iruka reached out and took the book from her. opening to the first tab, a bright pink one with maybe a little bit of glitter in the paper fibers. Pre-calculus questions and some basic trig. He could do this. He flipped to one of the later ones. He smiled as he saw a graphic of a circle with basic angles in radian and the answers for the sin and cosin of all of them. He remembered studying that. He held it up. "Have you gotten to this yet?"
Juri: "Uh huh, Sine is Opposite leg of the triangle over the hypotenuse, and cosine is the adjacent leg instead of opposite, and the tangent is opposite over the adjacent." She had to think about it, but she did remember it. She just wasn't naturally good at math, but she did really try at it. She actually was good at financial matters with money, but that didn't help her now.
Iruka: Iruka nodded and smiled. "Have you covered converting between radians and degrees?"
Juri: She shook her head, "No .... "
Iruka: Iruka nodded. "One Radian is about 57.3 degrees. There were a couple questions on my intro where you had to convert between them." He scooted to the edge of the bed and motioned for her to join him.
Juri: Juri nodded as she sat down next to him, her natural paranoia not in effect since she had decided that Iruka was harmless. Pointing at a problem in the book, she looked at Iruka, "Can you explain this? It doesn't make any sense to me."
Iruka: "Sure." Iruka leaned past Juri to grab her bag and hand it to her. "Do you have something I can write on?" Now that he was teaching, something he associated with small children and educating innocent minds, he felt calmer.
Juri: Pulling out a pink glitter Morning Misume notebook and opening it up past several pages of her neat handwriting until she found the end of the writing, she handed him the notebook. Not only were her clothes packed in that bag (her school uniform could be seen in there) but her school supplies were also in there. "Of course." She also had pens, however these all seemed to come from hotels in the area.
Iruka: Iruka took one of the pens. He wondered why she had so many from so many varying places but he didn't ask. She was moving here soon she said. "It's pretty simple if you can remember the formulas and know a few tricks." He drew out a crude sketch for a visual aid. "Always write down your variables it's much easier to remember what goes on which side of the division line if your units match up to get the units the book wants for your answer. For example: meters divided by seconds you get meters per second." He wrote the given values and their units into the sketch. This was pretty basic stuff that she probably already knew.
Juri: She nodded and paid perfect attention, even to the parts she already knew. After all, sometimes having a second or even third explanation could help explain things. She asked a few questions here and there and started to twirl her hair on her finger as she thought harder about the math. It really was her weakest subject. "Were there a lot of question on permutations and combinations when you took the entrance exam? I really hope I can get in." She didn't think she had a chance of a scholarship, but right now she was just thinking of getting in.
Iruka: Iruka was impressed. Juri was a good learner and not half as bad off as she let on. "A few. Not too many, but enough we should go over those. A lot of it is remembering everything from high school. so even if you can't remember one subject, as long as you can do everything else really well you don't have to worry." Aside from those few moments where she'd start playing with her hair, Iruka had managed to get his head under control. But when she played with her hair like that, especially leaning over his shoulder to look at the book, he was forced to bite his lip to concentrate on what he was teaching. He was so glad he would normally teach kids closer to the age of 10 than Juri. Juri was one of the best students he'd taught, but she was a very distracting pupil.
Juri: "I really hope so. I really need to get into that school." She bit her lip for a second, "I'm not worried about English or Japanese. I just think I need to get a decent score at Math, but so many really smart and rich people take the test to get in." She was obviously very worried about it, which might be the biggest hurdle she had to over come for doing well on the test.
Iruka: Iruka resisted the urge to rub her shoulder reassuringly. He was getting too informal around her. They'd only just met. "You're much smarter than you think you are. Tokyo University is a big school. They accept a lot of people. You can get in. I'm sure of it. Just keep studying every day like you are and you'll have no trouble."
Juri: She looked at him, obviously hopeful, "I hope so." She really wanted to believe him, but too many people had told her that girls like her don't get into schools like that. She didn't really believe the compliment, although that was a tactic not normally used on the complimenting at least. After a while her stomach grumbled. "Oh I'm sorry. I should probably go and find something to eat."
Iruka: "It's alright. If you want to stay I can make something, or we can go out to eat." Iruka offered, setting the books down with her bag. "It's really no trouble." Iruka was nothing if not a generous host.
Juri: She thought for a moment. "But I owe you food, and I have extra money right now after the contest. I could take you out to eat?" She didn't like letting people buy her meals without repaying them back, but she had been very short of money when Iruka had said he had extra food. "Just nothing expensive?"
Iruka: Iruka smiled. He knew what it was like to not want to be indebted. He'd just repaid Kakashi for a favor earlier that day. "If you want. I know a really good ramen place not too far from here." Inexpensive and filling. It was the same place he'd taken Kakashi earlier. "Perhaps you've heard of it? Ichiraku ramen?"
Juri: She smiled, "That sounds great." With a little yawn she quickly covered she started to repack her bag, careful to not wrinkle her school uniform. A pair of white pink converse were pulled from the bag to wear instead of the very impractical white boots. Five inch heels not the most practical. "Sorry I look such a mess."
Iruka: Iruka thought she looked very far from a mess, but he held his tongue. "It's fine. You look fine." Iruka smiled, helping her hold open her bag as she packed it. He thought he saw a scrap of the outfit she wore here and looked away, back at her face. "Have you ever been to Ichiraku Ramen?"
Juri: She shook her head. "No, I don't go out to eat much." Which didn't really make sense with the factoid she didn't have a kitchen. "It sounds good though. I've only had non instant ramen a few times." Considering that was one of the cheapest foods out there, the girl probably didn't go out much at all.
Iruka: Iruka frowned to himself. From the sounds of things Juri probably didn't get a whole lot to eat at all. He remembered she'd said she didn't have a kitchen. "You're always welcome to come over here. I'll be happy to have you." He smiled amiably.
Juri: She smiled, "Thank you. With any luck I'll be moving in to the building soon. This weekend paid really well." Juri actually had enough stuff in that bag that she could probably live out of it for a few days. "Lets go eat! warm food on a cold day is a great idea!"
Iruka: Iruka stood, holding his hand out for her. "Yes, lets."
Juri: She got up and smiled, "Lead the way!" She was definitely excited, even if she was tired from her long weekend working.
Iruka: Iruka led the way out of the building, grabbing his jacket from the hall closet, as she said. it was cold. He held the door for her, smiling. He was having a very good day, a little crazy, but it was good.
Juri: Juri had her long coat back around her and her purple glitter scarf around her neck. Even though it wasn't that cold, Juri liked to be warm. Her jeans and sweatshirt much warmer than her work outfit. "How far is it?"
Iruka: "Just a few blocks." Iruka walked beside her, thinking about how nice the cool breeze felt. "You aren't too cold are you?" It wasn't too cold, and Iruka was wearing long sleeves under his jacket, so if Juri wanted it he could safely lend her his coat without too much risk of catching a cold, even if his roommate was sick.
Juri: "No I'm fine. This coat is really warm. Just a little chilly from spending all weekend in that outfit." She did tighten her scarf a little bit though. She was probably much warmer than she had been when she came over at least. Plus she had had a warm shower to warm up. "This has been a great weekend." She sounded positively giddy after all this weekend and getting paid for three whole days of work. "I am soo excited to be able to move!"
Iruka: Iruka agreed. "What was your favorite part?" Iruka thought maybe here with Juri or out with Kakashi had been the most fun. He liked being out with friends. though it was hard to decide.
Juri: She had to think about that, looking up at the sky as she thought. "Hmmm, I don't know. Everything was so much fun. It was a great weekend. I have enough money to move, and actually feel like I might be able to get into the school I really want to. If I can keep working like this, I could even pay tuition without doing anything I don't want to do."
Iruka: Iruka smiled. "If you ever need help filling all your bills, I'd be glad to lend you a little money." Iruka didn't make much himself, so 'little money' meant probably not much more than he'd pay for dinner for the week, but he would give all he could spare and then some. Juri was a friend and he supported his friends.
Juri: Juri shook her head as they approached the ramen stand, "Thank you, but I don't accept money from men." She might have relaxed her rule for food, but not when it came to money. "I can pay the tuition, I'll find a way." She smiled as she said it, sounding much more innocent than the ominous tone she could have used. "What is good here?" She gestured at the menu of the stand.
Iruka: Iruka smiled at the old man behind the counter as he led them to a pair of stools. Coincidentally they were the same as when he was here earlier. "My favorite is the miso ramen, but a friend highly recommends the pork."
Juri: She nodded as she looked over the menu. When she decided, she gave the old man behind the counter a very cute smile as she waited for Iruka to order first. She was leaning on the counter and kicking her feet back and forth like a much younger girl would. She did look very happy though.
Iruka: Iruka ordered the miso ramen for himself and turned to Juri expectantly. She really did look cute like that. He looked back at the man making the ramen. She was only eighteen, and he shouldn't really be thinking like that anyway. Juri was a friend, and she probably wasn't interested in him at all. He was just plain Iruka, nothign spectacular.
Juri: Juri ordered a vegetable ramen. Nothing extra, just the vegetable ramen. After ordering she held her hands in front of her and smiled, "It feels warm from everything cooking." She liked being warm, unfortunately her chosen profession didn't let her stay very warm. "Do you come here often?"
Iruka: Iruka held out a hand to test the warmth, she was right. "I used to, but recently I started cooking for myself more. But coming back i realize i really like ramen, so I'll probably come here more again."
Juri: "I love cooking." Juri rarely was still, and this was no exception with her legs swinging. She wasn't looking at Iruka, rather she was watching the ramen be cooked. "I think Monday I will start looking for a roommate. I didn't see any girls looking for roommates though, only guys looking for roommates." She sounded like she wasn't even considering a male roommate.
Iruka: "Cooking's nice, but I like ramen." Iruka smiled as he got his bowl. "What's wrong with guys?" Iruka asked as he broke his chopsticks.
Juri: "I don't know. I mean sometimes I stay in my manager's living room. It just seems weird, you know a girl living with a guy she isn't at least seriously dating. I want to make it on my own, not just live off some guy." She nodded at what she said, as if emphasizing how serious she was about it.
Iruka: Iruka thought that made sense, but just because your roommate wasn't the same sex as you didn't necessarily mean anything. "Not necessarily. My roommate's a girl. It doesn't mean anything. We just do it to split the rent." Iruka made a conscious effort to eat his ramen slower than he usually did.
Juri: "Oh?" Juri looked really surprised at that. She was stirring her ramen that looked like it had a few more vegetables in it than normal. "I am sorry, I had assumed she was your girlfriend." She dropped her eyes and looked down at her ramen, eating rather slowly herself. Then again she was tired.
Iruka: Iruka nearly spat out his ramen as he spluttered. "No, we're just friends, but I didn't even know her when I rented the room. Tatsuki's nice though." He was glad she was his roommate.
Juri: "I am so sorry, I didn't mean to offend you." She continued to look down at bit her lower lip. She looked honestly apologetic for the assumption. Much more apologetic than Iruka would probably want her to be. She stopped eating as she tapped her nails together. They were pretty chipped up after scrubbing all the paint off them, but still were rather shiny. Definitely fakes though at that length,
Iruka: Iruka set his chopsticks down. "You didn't offend me. It's a reasonable assumption. But no, we aren't dating." He almost added he was single, but that would probably be forward of him, with this girl he'd only just met a week ago.
Juri: "I don't know what my manager would think of me living with a guy. I don't think he'd like it. Maybe if he didn't know, but if he found out I'd probably be in trouble." She started eating again. She didn't say anything about what her parents would think, just what her manager would think.
Iruka: Iruka went back to his food, taking consciously 'small' bites. They were about normal for most people, but they were smaller than what he usually took with ramen. " Why would your manager care?" It was probably none of his business, but that seemed a little odd to him. His manager probably didn't know he was living with a girl he hadn't met before they moved in together.
Juri: She looked at him, as if surprised at the question. "It might effect my reputation or my ability to get work. I'm not allowed to date or even be alone with a man in private. He might relax my rules if I get into the university." She lowered her voice, "If he knew I took a shower at your apartment, I'd be in trouble."
Iruka: Iruka frowned disapprovingly. "Your manager seems rather... demanding..." Iruka said carefully. He suddenly didn't trust her manager at all and worried for her. Those were odd rules to impose on someone even if they worked for you.
Juri: She just shrugged, "Its common for people in entertainment. Back when I wanted to be a singer, it was a standard contract clause. My trainers back when I was a skater had the same rules, so I guess it just seems natural to me." She didn't seem like it was a big deal. then again she followed all the singers in the Hello project and a bunch of other all girls groups so she was used to the idea.
Iruka: Iruka still didn't think it made sense. People's private life was their life, not something for someone from work to mess with unless they were invited into it. He let it go though. "You used to ice skate?"
Juri: She nodded. "Yes, I started when I was seven, so I started really late. I had done gymnastics before that though so it was OK." She picked up tilted her head as she looked at Iruka, "I'm a little too tall to be a gymnast, but skaters can be taller." For an ex gymnast ex skater and a model she did have a good appetite and had pretty much finished her ramen.
Iruka: Iruka finished his ramen, setting his chopsticks aside. "Why did you quit?" If she liked skating she should have followed her dream, but maybe it was something her parents made her do that she didn't enjoy. She seemed to like modeling though.
Juri: She looked a little wistful at that, sighing softly. The soft look she got to her eyes was not a common expression for the girl though, "I injured one of my vertebrae and it never healed quite right, so if I over do physical activity it hurts." While it may have been something she was required to do, she did love it. "When I can I still skate, just for fun though."
Iruka: Iruka smiled. "It's too bad you had to quit, but at least you still enjoy it. I've never been skating before." As far as he could remember he'd never been skating. He'd taken the kids from the orphanage out once for a field trip of sorts, but that had been a near disaster and he'd never gotten on the ice.
Juri: "It's like flying. When I was little, I'd stay on the ice after my trainer was done with me and just skate. I've done photo shoots on roller skates but never ice skates. Maybe if work keeps going well, I'll be able to go skating this winter." She smiled and laughed, "I do miss the outfits though, they were always so cute."
Iruka: Iruka grinned. He loved hearing about different people dreams about who they wanted to be. Hearing how much they loved whatever passion they had made him feel good inside. "Maybe we can go skating some time. I've never been and you want to go again. I expect I'll be really awful though. You'll have to teach me."
Juri: She laughed, "I'd love to. It is so much fun, and it's not like something where you have to be good, it can be just fun. I used to teach beginning classes to little kids, and they were always really bundled up so that they didn't hurt themselves when they fell down." Counting out the correct amount of money for their meals she paid the old man, smiling as she did it. She stood up and did a quick twirl on one foot before picking up her bag. "Skating is so much fun."
Iruka: Iruka smiled. She seemed to really like it. "I'll have to try it some time." He stood, walking over to the door to hold it open for her.
Juri: She was smiling as she walked towards the door. Life was good for Juri, at least in her mind. She had money in her pocket and warm food in her stomach. Sure she was going home to an ice cold apartment, but it could be worse. She covered up a yawn with her hands as she followed Iruka through the door, very used to men holding doors open. Never mind how early it was, the girl had been up until all hours and up really early as well for her work this weekend and she had school tomorrow morning.
Iruka: Iruka smiled, Juri really was quite cute in a sweet way. "Where do you live? I'll walk you home." In his opinion no girl should be left to walk herself home alone, especially if she was getting tired. It was just polite to take care of her.
Juri: She froze. Slowly turning to look at him, she shook her head, "No, that's fine. I know the way." As if she didn't really know the way home, that was a little ditzy of her to say. "Really, Its not that far. I've already bothered you much too much tonight." For once the smile was gone from Juri's face and replaced by worry.
Iruka: "It's no trouble, and it can be dangerous for a girl to be walking home alone." Iruka didn't notice the worry in her voice. He just wanted to make sure she got home okay.
Juri: She nodded, having to agree with his assessment, but still really worried about it. "It's nothing nice like where you live." She did however start walking away from the Katsu building as she walked away from the subway stations and the university heading towards a less desirable area of the neighborhood.
Iruka: Iruka followed beside her. This wasn't a nice place to be, not that many places within any big city were 'nice' places to be, but this was not one of the nicer places. "When do you move to the Katsu place?"
Juri: "I'm going to start looking for a roommate tomorrow." The girl didn't have close to the money needed to live alone in that building, unlike the rent in her hole in the wall she had right now. She kept walking, aware of her surroundings, even if she normally seemed oblivious to things, "You are very nice."
Iruka: Iruka smiled. "Thanks." He wondered where that came from. He was just polite, nothing special, just followed the common courtesies he'd been taught long ago. "Just want to make sure you get home okay." He was glad he came. he didn't like where she was living. He wanted her to be safe, so he could see her again.
Juri: She continued to walk farther away from the more popular areas. It wasn't a particularly dangerous area, but economically depressed could definitely cover it. Small apartment building full of small apartments with families living in them thanks to employee assisted living spaces and even smaller units where families lived without that perk. Small places that rented rooms by the night ot the week interspersed with the occasional convenience store or restaurant. Nothing big name and nothing fancy. Signs leading to doorways with more illicit entertainment could be found though. gentleman's clubs and strip clubs and various peep shows were just off the street she traveled along. "You really don't have to do this."
Iruka: Even if it wasn't inherently dangerous, desperate people could do desperate things when they needed money. "It's alright. Really, it's no trouble." He side stepped a dirty looking puddle.
Juri: She nodded, torn between thanking him and not. It was nice of him, but she really didn't want people to know where she lived, and not for security reasons, more because -- She stopped in front of a small older looking building that rented rooms by the night or the week. "This is it." The building was dark and a truck from one of the local electrical contractors was in front of the building. Evidently the problem with the electricity still being worked on. It was definitely not a nice building, but it could be worse.
Iruka: Iruka looked up at it. He hoped she moved into the Katsu building soon. It was much nicer than this place looked and cleaner. He had Juri to thank for that. "You can get to your room okay?" He just wanted his friends to be safe.
Juri: She nodded, "Of course, thank you Iruka-senpai. I am sure I will see you again soon." She gave him a quick bow then a smile and went into the building, eager to get out of the cold wind.
