I'm not going to do the whole list.

The way I see it, I have dozens of acquaintances, a handful of mates, but only 3 really true friends. They know who they are.

For me, at least, a true friend can get away with almost anything, but then I could get away with almost anything with them. It's never done to be hurtful, as hurting them would be like hurting myself. A true friend can also be told anything or criticised. If they can't take it in the spirit in which it's intended, they aren't a true friend. I've put my whole reputation and indeed my life in my friend's hands, and they've done the same with me. It has to be mutual. If it's not, they aren't that good a friend.

The problem comes with "mates" and "acquaintances". Far too many times, a mate assumes that they can get away with the above - and they simply can't. That's where being a cunt to each other comes in.

In summary to your thought of the day - I don't think it's possible to be a complete bastard to a true friend - but it is to just about everyone else, if you are that way inclined. But I think most people don't know what side of the line they fall on. And that's where people end up being cunts to each other.
