Lost girl icon tutorial + PSD
>>
Hello there!
sucksucksmile asked me a tutorial about
this icon of Dyson. I'm sorry I didn't write it sooner!
The original caps is this:
As usual, I opened the screencap in ps and resized/moved it around the canvas until I found something I liked. In this case I choose a common center crop, which let me to work better on the background.
You can see the caps doesn't cover the entire canvas, so I tried to fix this. I picked a brush with some kind of noise texture (I don't remember exactly which one I've used, but it's something like
this), I picked the colors from the background and covered the missing part. It doesn't have to be perfect, just try to adjust it a bit.
I merged all layers on top and applied auto-contrast and auto-tone.
I added a photo filter layer with the third cooling filter.
The background was too heavy for me, so I picked a hard brush and painted around the subject with the same green of the trees. I left the layer on normal, but I lowered the opacity to 60% to keep just a bit of the background, which is amazing as texture.
I choose two textures: (credits to the makers)
I set the first one on soft light, to add shadows and the second one on screen, to have a more colorful icon.
Now, my favourite part: the coloring.
I added a vibrance layer for bolder (is this even a word?) colors, a selective colors layer to adjust them, and merged all on top adding the auto-contrast.
I added this texture on screen, because a bit of purple is amazing with the green and the blue:

I merged all on top and used the variations (image - adjustments - variations); I don't have all the single passages, so just play around with them, they are really amazing and helpful for the coloring.
Final touches + PSD.
I added a bit of sharpen (filter - other - high pass:0.5 - layer on soft light ).
Finally a layer of levels to adjust lights and shadows!
Here the download for the PSD.That's all! I hope it's helpful.
I take advantage of this post to add a link to the others tutorials on my old journal.
