This weekend I went to Alkmaar Kaeskoppenstad, which is a historical festival in the city of Alkmaar. Specifically, the late 16th century, when the Dutch were fighting the Spanish, and an important victory was won in Alkmaar, I think.
So, I made a 16th century outfit! That is, I reused the skirt from my
Sacharissa cosplay and the shirt from
whatever this is, and made a bodice and apron to go with it. I used the tutorial and pattern generator on this page to make the bodice, though I will probably have to make another as I’m not 100% happy with the fit in the bust area.
The cap I’m wearing in the last pic I borrowed just for the picture from one of the festival volunteers, as I had not had time to make one for myself but was curious what it would do for the overall look.
I’m also still planning to make pin-on sleeves to go with this, probably reversible out of the green and blue fabrics so I can change the way the costume looks, and a reversible partlet as well because I think they look cool and it will probably help to wear this in cooler weather.
Almost everything is made from recycled materials, as usual: a table sheet for the apron (I could even use the existing hem!), curtains for the skirt, and bed sheets for the shirt and bodice (the outer layer I also dyed myself). The bodice is boned with cable ties, doubled up with painter’s tape. The basket is from goodwill, scored two days before the event, and the tea towels in the basket I just took out of our kitchen cabinets; they’re pinned in shape and whipstitched in place.
I was going to write more about construction, buuut I completely forgot to take pictures except one, so... Here's a pic of the strength layer, with the second mock-up I did basted to it so I could sandwich the cable ties in between.
