I don't really watch TV as much as I used to. I did today though. I turned on the TV to watch one of my favorite shows, but of course there was a commercial on. It was a State Farm insurance commercial. The ad mentioned that more people use State Farm for their insurance than any other Insurance provider in America. This started a chain reaction of thoughts through my head. It's apparent that advertisers will display their product in a way that purposely gives you a subconscience thought that you want that product.
Its been proven. You probably didn't know, but a few decades ago, movie theaters started to insert one frame(out of 24 per second) every couple of minutes during the movie, that would say something to the effect of "You want popcorn" This thought would get into the viewers head subconsciencly basically meaning your brain saw it but your eyes didn't. This makes them think, "Hmm, popcorn sounds really good about now" This resulted in popcorn sales going up at a substantial rate. Don't worry, they outlawed it.
I thought on this for a while. Then I thought more on the State Farm advertisement. Then I had an idea on the connection between the two. Its whats becoming so popular today in advertising. It's popularity itself. Have you ever seen a Ford commercial that advertised for "The best selling truck for 25 years in a row." At McDonalds some of the signs say "Over a billion served." ABC will advertise saying "More people get their news from ABC then from any other source." CBS calls itself "The most watched TV station." Many TV shows will mention in commercials how many millions of people tuned in to watch the show last week. Chuck Norris will tell you "More people use the Total Gym then the other home training systems advertised on TV." Papa Johns says it's "The fastest growing pizza chain." I could go on and on, but I think you get the point.
Times have changed. There was a time when advertisements would actually advertise the quality of their product instead of how popular it is. It used to be about how good the merchandise is. Now its join the club. That's because advertisers know we want to feel like we are apart of something. They see the lonely world and take advantage of their opprotunity. The world will just eat up anything its told if its in a voice that comforts them. "Ohh, it's the most popular thing around, so it must be great." We can be very gullible creatures. People figure I'll be cool if I join the club. In reality, the people who are cool are the ones who don't join the club. We often get so lost in the movement they we forget how to move on our own.
Individuality is steadily becoming a more and more popular ideal. The problem is the majority of people don't realize what it means to be an individual. Some people think they will be an individual if they do the opposite of the above paragraph. Some people think they will be an individual if instead of joining the club, they avoid the club. Although this makes you no more of an individual. An Individual is someone who does what they want, think what they want, and be apart of what they want without any regard to opinions on whats cool and whats not cool. Being an individual isn't joining the club, and it isn't avoiding the club. Its being in your own club. A state of mind where you don't care if that club is the coolest thing around, or if it's outcasted. It's still doing it because its who you are and not what others think. Striving for popularity is over-rated.
