why I love Bush ... Radio

yesterday Beth and I, equipped with a newly-repaired minidisc recorder from Bush Radio, trekked out to Nyanga and Phillipi East with Thembani and June of Gun-Free South Africa to check out how prepared the police stations are for the handgun amnesty (for three months you can turn in an illegal handgun without being prosecuted). Nyanga (township area on the Cape Flats) was quite prepared ... Phillipi (similar area) much less so. got some good ambient noise of police, have plans to do some "man-on-the-street" interviews about gang crime and am going to try to set up one more interview, with youth involved in anti-gang work, before we leave. I've spent every afternoon this week except Monday at Bush Radio and it's been awesome :-) folks there have a nice habit of inviting us to hip-hop events and broadcasts, such as the Ten Years of Democracy event tomorrow.

this morning was a horrendous midterm from Loren Kruger - "comment on the historical conditions of Cape slavery, emancipation, slave responses, appropriations and suppressions of Cape slave history, current reconstitutions of that history ..." in 40 minutes, of course. hopefully tonight post-Bush we can get out and have fun - although not too much fun, because tomorrow morning is an early-morning field trip to Robben Island. In general I've felt a bit overscheduled by the powers that be in our program. getting out to do interviews has been logistical madness - never mind exploring the city. Loren, in general, can be somewhat overwhelming/controlling ... she doesn't allow much discussion in class, assigns bulky readings and holds class an hour longer than all of our other professors in this program.

but how much can one complain about studies in paradise, especially with the weekend coming up?
