Is it weird that I don't like Harry Potter but I do like Harry/Sirius?

Apr 19, 2011 00:39

It's hard to explain why I've never really gotten into the mammoth that is Harry Potter. I like JK Rowling as a person and a writer, but stories about kids put me to sleep and the first two movies put a really bad taste in my mouth. Since then I only watch the Rifftrax (Mystery Science Theater) versions of the movies, and I noticed a little ( Read more... )

Hm, I had no idea about most of the things you mentioned, except for Ginny. On screen I was like, "Really? This chick could not be more boring if she tried." And that kiss? TWILIGHT has better kisses than that crap, which is really saying something. To me, it felt like Hermione was already spoken for so Rowling had to shoehorn some random chick in for Harry because heaven forbid the hero ends up alone. >.>

I have no idea who Luna even is, which is apparently a testament to the film series' neglect. O.O

You are definitely right about the shoehorning. I mean, even the movies didn't set her up as a love interest until the final book came out and in the sixth movie gave her more of a plot and they forgot the two scenes that are truly Harry/Ginny in every book until the sixth and they're not even that glaringly obvious because I was a bit miffed when Harry/Ginny came about. It was written horribly too, because I remember in the last book Harry goes off on this adventure WITHOUT Ginny and she just sort of waits around until he gets back. I feel like if she loved him or if she was integral to Harry, Rowling would have sent her on the adventure too, but of course that would feel wrong and it shows how WRONG it is ( ... )

Ohhhhh THAT'S Luna, I remember her from OotP now. I liked her weirdness.

It's damn sad that message wound up being in HP, you'd think it'd be the exact opposite. -.-

And not to add all the wrong messages written in the book, like the Hero never fails, if the Hero tortures he's right, that Gryffindors are always right and Slytherins always wrong, that gay love is wrong and evil (Dumbledor and the pre-Voldemort evil lord I-don't-remember-his-name). More here, if you're intested to know more. Beware, the reading will totally ruin the series to your eyes.

Oh don't worry, it was ruined long ago for me, lol. Don't even get me started on the Slytherins, how for six books it was said over and over that the houses must unite to win the day, and in the last book, every single Slytherin walks out on the battle. I'm very much a skeptic and even before that book I didn't agree with a lot of themes (I think that's why I loved Sarah Brennan's fanfic, because she always had Harry and Draco arguing about their sides and it always made the heroes equal to the bad guys.)

I have read few to nothing H/D in English, because there is a huge, very complete HP slash archive in italian, but there are few that had been translated from English to Italian. Ever read Secrets by Vorabiza? It depicts Slytherin as better than they are in canon, the point of making you love even Lucius (whom I'm in love with anyway, but...).

Harry Potter is a wonderful fandon, and I'll always be grateful to J.K. Rowling for give us that world, but non canonly, only as a fandom with the potential to become even more huge and drastically changed in many parts.
=_=

I'm somewhat addicted to that link now, it's incredibly interesting. Also, I found this in a review of the OotP movie:

"I'm not sure if the film makers were intending to ship Harry and Sirius but with all the lingering looks, winks and smiles between them that's certainly how it appeared to me. And I'm not even a slasher."

FURTHER VINDICATION...and also more confusion as to why they're not a bigger ship. o.O

Yeah, that site is addictive. XD

Yes, in OotP the pair is very, very slashable, and this coming from someone who cannot stand Sirius and ships Harry only with Draco. XD It's all the actors fault to me, because even Harry/Draco seemed to me more slashable "in flesh" than from the books but, now that I think about it, I read the books when I still didn't knew what slash was. ^^"
Anyway, to reply to your confusion. I'm sure the pair is little because Sirius is either paired with Lupin or James while Harry, if they want for him to be paired with an adult, gets Piton. :-/

I agree with all of that, especially the Harry/Draco and Harry/Luna thing. I still love Harry/Draco actually but I've rarely found fics for them with decent writing and characterization (I haven't dug deep enough I suppose, I need to find a good rec list). As for the epilogue, I just pretend it doesn't exist lol ( ... )

I have a delicious tag for Harry/Draco that's not very big considering I used to read everything and anything for years, but I think it contains my personal favorites and most of them are pretty good. I highly recommend the following from the list: Paris, Origins, Cure for the Flu, Transfigurations, Oscillate Wildly, and The Way of the World.

God, Ginny just grates at me. Oh, I know a lot of people that like Hermione/Snape. I'm not one of them, but it does sort of make sense in a way.

I agree, the books are wildly different, which is why there was a thousand ships and everyone likes something different. I don't think I've read so many pairings in one fandom before, but there truly IS something for everybody and you can make the case for a lot.

Merlin is the same way. There's support for every pairing imaginable because the show teases everything, no matter the taboo. That's a big reason why that fandom is so harmonious. Everyone knows that everyone else's ship is justified so it all merely comes down to personal taste and there's no petty "well my ship is more canon than your ship" bickering.

Ultimate rec list for Draco/Harry privatebozz May 23 2011, 23:11:41 UTC
I had the same problem but thankfully a few days ago I stumbled upon a high class rec list for Draco/Harry fic:

http://reccingdrarry.tumblr.com/post/3596625124/fics-recced-so-far

I'm a pretty picky slash reader, but I've read four so far and all of them have been amazing, all of very high quality (Harry and Draco very in character etc). I even read one story I normally wouldn't have on the basis of the summary (I do have my preferences..) and it turned out one of the best D/H fic I know. I am so happy I don't have to search hundreds of bad fic for maybe one decent one anymore - well at least for a while.. One problem less, umpteen hours of fun to go. :-D
