I think that America should distinguish a phrase or comment to say when someone hiccups. You can't say "bless you", why would you need to bless someone just for having irritation of the diaphram?
Since we don't usually have a hiccup cliche, unless you count the common comments of wisdom like: "I heard that you can cure them by:....drinking water with a paper towel over it....holding your breath!....boo!? Did I scare you?" .... we either stare, or just pretend like the person next to us didn't just make an awkward sound.
The other day at work while I was at the balloon counter, a woman hiccupped and I said "oh excuse you" without thinking. She looked embarrassed , and then as if I had just insulted her. For the ongoing time being, I would like to avoid situations like this.
