It is unusual for a cinema not to have a small candy counter where at least a box of chocolates can be bought. Ice cream is less common.

The 'upscale' Ice cream trend became popular in the US largely through sales in grocery stores. Haagen-Daas was one of the very first really well known luxury ice creams, but Ben and Jerry's kicked their ass on both flavor and social consiousness, they really do rather rule the roost (I just wish they'd bring back Cool Brittania)

Jelly-filled doughnuts (that's how I've always spelled it, a quick visit to www.krispykreme.com confirms the spelling as well) are quite common in the us. They get filled will all kinds of stuff. Custard, a variety of jellies.

Krispy Kreme are double-light because they are both yeasted and fried. Doughnuts that are not yeasted are sometimes cake doughnuts and they are even sometimes baked, but it's pretty accepted that fried doughnuts are much more yummy than baked ones.

As for American being bad for you, it has to do with a culture of consumption and competition that drives everything to try to be more well, everything. Much longer discussion to be had about that one. Shame you wern't at katyha's pub thing, it was discussed a bit there.

Ben & Jerry's got sold to a multinational, though - P&G I think. I have to admit I tend to avoid them as most of their flavors have crud in, like marshmallow or fudge or caramel or uncooked dough, and I'm a bit of a purist for flavors!

UK donuts are also yeasted and fried, but I think KK have more yeast and baking powder? Pret a Manger sell baked doughnuts which are crap - like bread with jam in!

20 years ago 'American' meant exotic and expensive. Now it seems to have made a bit of a comeback but only in the munchies market and for fridge-freezers. Will discuss at some pubmeet in the future.

Unilever, for $326 million. Mm, very much in keeping with the hippy ideal!
