Having a slight identity crisis

So I'm a British/American citizen (American by birth, British through marriage). Moved to the UK at age 19 to go to uni and be with my fiance, which has all been fine and good up till recently. Lately I've found myself detesting my American heritage, I will hide the fact that I'm American from as many as people as possible. A friend recently pointed out that a lot of my entries in my own journal are getting rather anti-American in nature. I'm not sure why I do this, I don't think it's intentional, just an automatic reaction. Perhaps it's because when I get involved in debates with some fellow Americans, I end up being the target of abuse and name-calling (one even going so far as to call me a traitor to my birth country o_O). While I'm aware that this is not normal for most, it can be incredibly frustrating that that has become the only side of America I seem to see. I even find it more frustrating lately to find more and more American consumerism creeping into Britain, though I am well aware that multi-culturalism can be a good thing. Am I being too harsh to say that I detest a part of my cultural heritage? Somewhere along the way I seem to have lost sight of the good things about American, surrounded by all the heated debates about gun control, heathcare, excessive blind patriotism, etc. Just as an aside, I am also aware that not all Americans are like the ones I described above, I just hardly ever see or hear from them I suppose.

I suppose what I'm after in this post is a reminder of all the good things that I've forgotten about. I'm also aware that some people might be offended by this post, I assure you no offense is intended, just feeling a bit lost at the moment. Hope that I haven't broken any posting rules either. :P
