Fairly specific historical question.

Hey all,

I'm a Brit, and I've been looking around for an answer to this question for a while, to no avail, and couldn't find anything under the 'history' tag. During Prohibition, what sort of places would people have gone to meet and chat in public, instead of bars? More specifically, what sort of places would youngish, upper-middle-class white guys have gone? (Not that I'm not interested in hearing about other folks, too -- that just happens to be what I absolutely need to know for reference right now.) If they were Brits, they'd probably be at a gentlemen's club, but I'm not sure whether the US has/had equivalents of those kinds of places.

Thanks in advance, to anybody who's able to help out. :)
