check on UK-Yankee, but I'm pretty sure it's been determined that this won't affect people on spousal visas. I'm not sure about if you're in the UK on a work visa though, so check on UK-Y.

I think if you're already here then you're OK unless you need to apply for another visa. I can't quite see them sending a bill for £50 to existing holders of ILR, it would cost them more than that to collect it. Extracting more from those yet to apply is still easy and doesn't cost any more to collect than what it would cost anyway.

What do they need the extra money for, again? Are there any studies done that show the supposed strain of immigrants on the community, or are they just blowing smoke?

The government is very unpopular. An election is looming. Immigration has come from nowhere ten years ago to be up there with law and order in opinion polls. The only real surprise to me is that the figure is as low as £50.
