American TV vs. British TV

I've had BBC America on in the background for a few hours. I watched a few British TV shows in my time, and I grew up in and went to school for theatre. I've noticed a very distinct difference between Brit vs. American actors.

The British actors, of all genders, look like, you know, REAL PEOPLE. Of varying looks, shapes, ages, and sizes. Not like impossibly beautiful, perfect, Hollywood-built models...but actual people. That you might pass on the street anywhere (not just L.A. or New York).

I also notice roles are actually cast age appropriately...40 year old characters look like an average person's 40, not a 30 year old or a 40 year old with a face stapled back so tight they look like 20 year old alien.

Interestingly, I notice that, IMO alot of the British actors are considerably BETTER at their craft than the pretty faces/eating disordered bodies of Hollywood...as if the English actors spent the same countless hours in acting class that American actors spent in the gym, rather than vice versa. As it should be.

It appears talent and skill is valued above looks in the British entertainment industry, whereas looks often seem to come way before talent in the American entertainment industry. I have to wonder what this says about our individual cultures.

What do you think?
