My family (grandparents, parents, 10-year old sister) are all coming over to visit me in Scotland next week, and then we're going down to London. My mom, my sister and I might visit Newcastle and York and the coast a little, if we have time ( Read more... )

If she's at all into history or has a morbid sense of humour, she might like the London Dungeon. I remember loving it when I was around that age.

In York, the dungeons could probably interest her if she's into history at all. Assuming you don't take her to the Edinburgh or London ones of course.

I thought about reccing Jorvik, but since I never actually went there I wasn't sure I could. I always had the impression it was rather touristy. The Castle Museum's good though, but you'd have to pick and choose which parts to see as it's got so much - I think I spent 5 hours there across two trips and still hadn't seen it all. I never did get round to going back and seeing the part I most wanted to see, alas. (It was free for residents, so really I had no excuse.)

The London Eye, Natural History Museum and the Tower of London are all good for kids. I've not done it but there are cruises on the Thames that could be interesting.

Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Wellcome Collection (Euston Road between Euston and St Pancras stations) (all free, best on weekdays).
London Eye (book ahead online).
Camden Markets on a Saturday.
Hamleys.
London Zoo.

The Wellcome Collection only if she's of a scientific (or morbid) bent, though.

In my opinion The Wellcome Collection is not suitable for most 10-year-olds.

Has anybody mentioned Madame Tussauds and the Planaterium? You can go to this famous wax-works museum and also go to a show at the planetarium, in the same trip (they're connected).

Near there are shops of interested to Beatles fans and Sherlock Holmes fans, but you'd know if a 10-year-old was a Beatles or Sherlock Holmes fan already.

The Tower, including the Crown Jewels.
One of the open-top bus tours.
Bits of the British Museum or V&A.
Hamleys and Covent Garden.
Tour of the Globe theatre (I think there's workshops for kids, too)

If you're getting the train up to York/Newcastle then take a look at platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross and pose for photos!
