I am only kidding when I call myself "stupid", because I am assuming many brits roll their eyes when they read posts such as mine...I'm sure I would.

Constructive responses are appreciated. I don't really know who we should be calling stupid when people make responses only to make personal attacks.

you see, and i was going to put a p.s. to my original comment by saying "you can't be that stupid if you want to go for a Ph.D." but now i don't think it's worth it.
my feelings are hurt.

Personally I'm still confused as to why you would introduce yourself as 'a stupid American'.

As I mentioned, it is all in kidding, and I was hoping that by putting out what I imagined others were thinking, I could avoid some of the snarky comments that seem to come up so frequently.

Sorry, but I think snarkiness and making people feel bad about themselves or what they want in their lives is what many people on this community live for. Hopefully you'll get some real answers to your questions amidst all of the crap.

Agreed, cheers!

It's what a lot of LiveJournal in general lives for, unfortunately.

If you've got concerns about the community that you'd like to discuss, feel free to post it here or shoot me an email.

just out of curiosity, why would you think you'd get snarked for asking a legitimate question about studying abroad? I mean, without the "stupid american" bit at the beginning it seems like a perfectly good question.

I for one have been looking at doing an LLM program in the UK and probably going for a ph.d. afterwards so i can teach.

i just wouldn't have prefaced it with the stupid american bit- the irony is that that part of it kinda begged for the snark.

in response to the substantive part of your post, find a school that has the MA you are interested in and contact them. All of the schools i've been checking out have an international students office and will gladly assist you in application procedures and financing questions. in terms of employment post-graduation, ask the international students office. Tell them what you want and see what they have to say. Their ability to be a resource is probably better than a bunch of bored goofballs in teh internets.

I actually hadn't considered contacting the international students office, that's great advice, thank you!

It's a demonstration of a more-typically British sense of humour. Irony and self-depreciation.

Sorry, I can't help at all with the original question, but good luck with it!

It was either that or people getting nasty because they can hide behind the interwebs.
Thanks for your kind honesty :)

I'm British. I don't expect American posters here to use self-deprecation and irony. Perhaps that was why I was confused(!). I'm not sure why the OP thought her question would be taken as stupid, so her explanation doesn't really make sense.

I wasn't calling you stupid -- you called yourself stupid, and I was calling attention to the silliness of that fact. No intelligent person would object to your question -- it's not a stupid question, and there's no reason to go around self-deprecating for the fact of being American.

Also, I hope you wouldn't really roll your eyes if a British person posted such a question. I don't see why.
