quilting thread

I love to quilt, unfortunately I didn't bring enough hand quilting thread with me to Newcastle, England to complete a project. I haven't noticed any craft stores in the city and am wondering if anyone knows of a good place to find thread? Do regular department stores like Marks and Spencer carry it? It seems the British are not big on quilting...at ( Read more... )

You could try Grainger Market (it's sort of like a flea market where everything is new or edible and all the booths are permanent) for the less expensive stuff. Fenwick's or Bainbridge's department stores in the City Centre will likely have thread including the 'invisible' nylon stuff but check the price before you buy. Somehow I picked up a spool of thread that was going to cost me more than £5 in Fenwick's one time. They are all right in the centre of town so not too hard to find. Use Google Maps if you have any doubts as to how to find them...I find printing off a little map of the City Centre/Eldon Square area and marking the shops on it saves me quite a bit of walking if I want to go to a particular shop that I don't frequent often.

yeah, I thought of Grainger Market...but I was afraid it might be lower quality. I was at Fenwick's this evening, just didn't look for thread! I have to have a look =)

There is a whole big crafts area in Fenwick's basement. I haven't been out for a while but they do have lots of sewing stuff and fabric including fat quarters. The market has the plain old sewing thread that I use for sewing clothing and quilting. I am not too fussy about thread so 3 spools for £1 or whatever suits me fine. It runs through my machine without breaking or slubbing which is basically all I am looking for. The thread in Fenwick's probably has properties I am unaware of but at the price they were asking for that particular brand I am happy to remain ignorant. LOL Fenwicks definately has the invisible nylon thread. I am not a fan of it but I know lots of quilters prefer it to colour matched thread.

There's a Hobby craft in team valley? I think that's the name. John Lewis' also often carry haberdashery if there is one nearby, as do Boyes.

I'd suggest John Lewis as well -- their knitting stock is quite good, and from what I've seen of their thread it's worth looking at, even if it is a bit dear.

No, we're not big on quilting. As suggested, you should try craft shops (you may have to go on line); I don't think even places like John Lewis would be sure to carry it. I have friends who do make things in patchwork, including cot quilts for babies, and they simply use ordinary thread.

You could try Beamish Museum, they have quilting and mat making there and must have suppliers.

Try the yellow pages (yell.co.uk) - I found the following under "Patchwork and Quilting", and there are various places under fabrics and haberdashery.
