British veg...

I've offered to make a nice dinner for my friends because I'm skint this holiday season and cannot afford presents. They've all chosen the same day in December, and all of them have requested I make British food.

My trusty "British Food" cookbook (which, interestingly enough, I bought at Fountains Abbey) has quality recipes, so I've chosen Shepherd's Pie and this dish of peas, green onions and bacon, which is apparently British. The photo looks nice; in fact, the whole book is, but I had to limit myself to just dinner and let them bring snacks/dessert.

Anyway, I want to make another veg, but something that isn't potato-based because the Shep Pie has enough potatoes on it. I admit that root vegetables feature a lot in British cooking, so this may be difficult.

Does anyone have any ideas of a nice British vegetable dish that would work with this, preferably without potatoes? Would Yorkshire puddings (not a veg - just clarifying) be an okay side dish?
