Have not seen too much squee about this episode, so I clicked with relief on your review and found myself nodding along wholeheartedly. Like you, I thought the Bobby/Ellen affectionate crankiness was perfect, and I loved the details they had fun with - all the Celine Dion stuff epecially. Heh. As well as practically everything out of Balthazar's mouth.
And yes, our Cas is lying badly, ain't he? All being set up for some primo Dean angst, one hopes.
I'm sure I'll understand some of the criticisms when I finally get a chance to read some other reactions and see the non-squee! I kind of like having a delay, though, so I can just bask in simple pleasures like SAM'S FACE for a bit.
I liked it! I've been waiting to see more of Cas's regrettable things for a long time, Bobby/Ellen was a lovely entry in the exhibits of possible relationships between hunting and domesticity the season is working through, Sam and Dean were being quietly, undramatically brotherly -- IT'S THEIR DEFAULT OPTION AGAIN AT LAST, OMG -- and I like the shift from last season's obsession with personal destiny to the whole complicated mess of chaos and fate they've got going.
And yes, our Cas is lying badly, ain't he? All being set up for some primo Dean angst, one hopes.
