She pulls out of his hug. She immediately regrets it.
He offers to take her to get a bite to eat, after all, he did interrupt her dinner when he arrested her date. Her brain tells that she has a lot of paperwork to catch up on now that the case is solved. Besides, she’s not even that hungry anyway. But the lingering feeling of his hands massaging small circles into her back clouds her rationality. They decide to go to the diner.
He orders two slices of apple pie. She gets a milkshake and they share a plate of fries. She ends up eating most of them. The conversation is sparse, but even in their quiet moments, there is comfort.
After they pay, she asks him to drop her off at the lab. He insists on taking her home; she needs a goodnight’s rest after the events of the day. She agrees, but only because the longer drive to her apartment means she gets to spend more time with him.
She takes the stairs to prolong the inevitable. She enters the silence of her apartment, tosses her keys on the counter, and drapes her coat over the chair. Her brain tells her that she should answer some e-mails; the last time she checked, her inbox was full and her publisher had some questions regarding her manuscript. However, the thought of a warm and comforting bed clouds her rationality. She decides to go to sleep.
She enters the silence of her bedroom, glancing around the beige walls and the simple decorations. Her eyes fall on the empty bed she’s about to crawl into. She smiles to herself, then it falters.
She likes her life, and she loves her job.
But she concludes that she doesn’t like to be alone after all.
