okay, so I'm a noob at photoshop and I've only worked with brushes and never with textures... so, erm, how do I load them into photoshop?

For the ones in this tutorial, just right click on textures and select "save image as" then save it to wherever. Then open the file in Photoshop, copy the texture, and paste it onto the icon you're working on. Most texture makers post their textures in a set that's in a zip folder. In that case, just unzip the folder and then open the files in Photoshop from there. The files are usually just .jpeg or .png so they work like any other image you use in Photoshop. :)
