Character Name: Shaun Hastings
Character Journal: britbitchsnark
Canon: Assassin’s Creed
Point in Canon: Memory Sequence 3 in Brotherhood - post rescue Caterina Sforza (roughly late September time in 2012)
Age: 24ish?

Appearance: Roughly at 5’10, he’s on the lean side. But then again when you’re constantly on the run it happens to you. He’s pretty much always seen in a dress shirt, grey v-neck jumper with the sleeves rolled half way up his elbows, black trousers and his simple thin black framed glasses. A typical look for the stereotypical history buff.
His hair’s short and coppery brown, but well surprisingly well kept. He also has a hint of stubble, bordering a seemingly permanent 5 o’clock shadow of the same hue.

Abilities: Nothing noteworthy of being classed as superhuman abilities. He’s a Historian and acts as a tactician for the Assassins on the field. He also has the ability to get on the wrong side of most of the people he seems to meet, or simply a knack for being plain insulting, so far as to having to duck out of making food trips into town because he ends up aggravating one of the locals to the point of a death threat.

Personality: Shaun was always one of those kinds of people that usually just get labelled conspiracy theorists. Even at the age of 14 he was insistent on the idea that life wasn’t as black and white as people made it all out to be. There had to be something more. After all, if History was anything to examine, it was always written by those who had been victorious, so of course everything would be written how they saw fit, rather than the truth. In that sense he was always good at making connections to things, seeing how even the more obscure, random things could be linked. However from this he’s also become a bit of a sardonic, cynical sort of guy. Because he lacks the necessary skills needed for working in the field, and also by the not really wanting to kill part, he’s usually left on the sidelines - as he puts it. From this it’s arguable that he’s got mixed feelings on his position within the Brotherhood. It’s never stated what exactly happened with regards to his parents, but it’s safe to assume he hasn’t been allowed contact (probably for their own safety), which would undoubtedly leave somewhat of a chip in his shoulder - Perhaps not directly at the Brotherhood, just bitter about the circumstances. Despite this, he does seem to enjoy the British tradition of complaining about anything and everything possible, although it would be more accurate to say that he complains because of the little respect he gets from his position.

Despite his dry wit and sometimes borderline offensive humour, which makes him seem fairly inaccessible for conversation, he is a relatively reasonable sort of person. Initially it’s seen that he disliked Desmond as he was all too ready to shoot off insults at him, not to mention probably everyone in the team, especially with constant snark matches against Rebecca. (Lucy is seemingly exempt from these verbal attacks, but that could be out of respect or knowing better than to be rude to your higher up.) But he is at least a caring person, shown first when Rebecca and Lucy explain the Bleeding effect, even if this could be put down to knowing without Desmond they were useless. However from experience of seeing what the Bleeding effect did to Subject 16, it’s a fate that even he wouldn’t wish on anyone due to its horrific nature.

In Brotherhood, Shaun’s seen to be a little less high strung, or he’s simply adjusted to Desmond’s presence. However the majority of the time they speak only about History, which Shaun could very happily talk about all day - so this might be perhaps the reason for their apparent truce. Though him and Rebecca are just as sarcastic to one another, as proven when Rebecca openly humiliates him about his previous relationship with Katie. But even if they try to verbally castrate one another, Shaun does respect her, especially considering that she was the one who saved him and has continued to do on many occasions, so it’s safe to say that their arguments aren’t out right malicious. This is also apparent in the email exchange where Rebecca asks where her mp3 player is and Shaun obliges in telling her.

History: Shaun was interested in conspiracies and the unknown from an early age. Though he was initially unaware of the existence of modern-day Templars and Assassins, he did realise that there was a company called Abstergo Industries that was "up to no good" and decided to try and put a stop to them. Shaun tried to dig up information on Abstergo's activities and then attempted to tell others about his findings, unaware that the Templars would try to silence him. Fortunately, Rebecca Crane "rescued" Shaun and recruited him into the Assassin Order. This was somewhat unconventional, as Assassins are usually born into the order.

Shaun's role in the order is to provide tactical support to the other Assassins. After Lucy Stillman and Desmond Miles escaped to the hideout, Desmond entered the Animus to relive his ancestor Ezio Auditore's memories. Shaun supplied Desmond with interesting database entries and the occasional piece of advice on glyph puzzles,. However, as the historian of the Assassins, Shaun was always busy working on his computer and rarely had any opportunities to speak with Desmond - telling him to "go away." Their relationship was instantaneously rocky straight off the bat as he began to insult Desmond’s abilities. This hints at the fact that Shaun doesn’t think him to be a very good assassin when they first meet, saying that Desmond barely tried to escape Abstergo (meaning that he made little effort in comparison to how others in the Brotherhood would do so.). It is either this or Shaun bears a strong jealousy at the fact that Desmond can freely use the Animus and explore the history of his ancestors, as Shaun constantly emails Lucy asking if he can use it, and is also constantly rejected by her giving no reply.

However they can’t stay at the base (of unknown location, assumedly Italy) for long as Abstergo manages to track them down after Desmond gets the message from Minerva. Whilst Lucy and Desmond take on the guards and Vidic, Shaun and Rebecca work on loading up the van with the animus and the rest of their equipment. Upon escaping, they arrive at Monteriggioni in Tuscany two hours or so later. Ironically hiding in the Assassin’s sanctuary underneath the Auditore Villa where Altair’s armour had been locked away.

After entering the sanctuary beneath the Auditore villa in Monteriggioni, Shaun continues on doing his research just like before. But before any of this can be done, Rebecca sends him and Desmond around the town to hook up gadgets she’d invented to direct more electrical supplies towards their base.
One of the E-mails that can be read reveals that he’s overlooking the status of teams in Moscow, Sao Paolo and Osaka and assumedly sometime before a team in Denver.

He seems to be much nicer to Desmond now (probably since they only talk about history, or somehow he proved his worth in the escape). Though, he is still just as rude as ever toward Rebecca which causes Lucy to make him work more shifts, or is sent as punishment to go fetch food supplies and the like (though this was for making fun of Lucy attempting to make a joke).

After Desmond has completed the 3rd memory sequence, he questions Shaun about what happened to Caterina Sforza. Shaun tells him that she never regained control of Forli and died of pneumonia. It’s also revealed that at some stage Shaun was dating a girl called Kate. He brags about how he ‘charmed the pants off her’, but is cut off when Rebecca corrects him and says he never made it to 2nd base with her as she found out when they had lunch together.

Although one thing that becomes heavily insinuated as you read through the other team member’s e-mails, left unsaid is there’s potential for a relationship (previous or current) between Rebecca and Shaun at some stage, especially after Shaun’s comment: ‘There are some things even a computer can’t do, like love Rebecca.. like love.’

Third Person Sample:
A little hurt, his ego bruised (once again) he turned back to his desk, supposedly doing research. The bloody cheek of it all! Like he wasn’t underappreciated enough around here Rebecca had to verbally castrate him in front of Desmond and Lucy. He’d find a way to get back at her.. somehow. Probably best to do it indirectly-well he had the perfect idea.
Closing his eyes to mull over how he’d make the potential cipher sound realistic he took a deep breath, smiling smugly to himself - yes, make it like Leonardo with the codexes and have obscure supposed anagrams, that sort of thing. Genius Shaun.
When he opened his eyes again however he blinked in confusion. It wasn’t the dull Assassin’s sanctuary.. it was the old safe house they were in previously.
“The bloody hell..?” Oh wait, no it wasn’t it just looked like it. “…Rebecca? Lucy? .. Desmond? Hello?”
This had to be a joke of some kind right? Wait, it didn’t look like the Italian street they were used to outside, it was like the garden of a fancy manor house. Where the hell was he? Normally he’d have jumped to blame the Templars, but.. really how the hell would they have pulled this off?

There had to be someone with answers. Looking around for anything that might have been out of place he spotted an old model of a Blackberry lying around on his desk. Had to have been from last year. Fumbling with it it didn't take long for him to work out how it worked, though one thing that was slightly unsettling was that it was connected to a restricted network of other handsets...
"Right. Wonderful. I've finally gone mental. The stress has gotten to me so much that I'm yelling at myself. Wankers."

First Person Sample:
[Shaun appears on the feed, looking distinctively disgruntled.]

Hello? Is anyone there, hello? Would anyone care to shed some light on just what’s going on here? Bloody hell, bloody hell, bloody hell….
Look I need to get back to Monteriggioni, there’s a lot of things I need to be doing that I'm sure you won't understand. Hey! Arsehole, are you even listening?!

[The feed cuts out, and interrupts a string of swearing and insults.]
