School's out! Summer to begin shortly...

May 16, 2003 14:50

Trying out this new LiveJournal update client...looks really nice. It's called Semagic, and it's better than just the text entry field of the other one...lots of options and everything.

Anyways, as the title says, school's out. I'm done with my work and it feels good...the semester didn't go the way I thought it would academically, but I talked about that in my last entry, and the summer/fall will be better anyway. So I'm looking forward to it.

Most of the CMU people have left already...Jason left on Sunday, Dwight on Tuesday, Alex on Wednesday...some are still here, mostly the people that are staying here all summer, like Yanna (yannaboo). Jason's coming back in town tomorrow (the Penn State job fell through, but he got a job at CMU instead working in robotics, so instead of living in State College he'll be right over on Hobart St, a few doors down from Dwight...what a kickass summer this is going to be), and we (or at least I, and probably he too) are going to help Sarah move her stuff in on Sunday. She got a research grant to stay in town this summer, too, so add another to the list of people who will be here. Andy gets back the 20th (I'll just miss him) and Phil & Matt (divisionk) will get back while I'm gone, but I'll be able to catch Matt for a couple of days before he goes back to Maryland, and Phil's here all summer, so it's cool.

Where am I going on the 20th? Well, I talk to most of you readers already anyway, so you know this, but for those of you that don't, I'm flying out to Portland, Oregon, to spend a couple of days with Dwight and his family. Then we pack our stuff into his Maxima and start driving. All the way back to Pittsburgh. It's going to be the best kickoff to an awesome summer...

Day 1: Portland to Spokane, Washington

Day 2: Spokane to Glacier National Park (the first major stop - this place is going to be amazing, we might even camp out that night)

Day 3: Glacier NP to Bozeman, Montana

Day 4: Bozeman to Mt. Rushmore, South Dakota (always wanted to see this, I've been told it's really awesome - maybe we can see the Crazy Horse memorial that they're blasting out of the rock too)

Day 5: Mt. Rushmore to St. Paul, Minnesota (Alex's home)

Day 6: Tearing up the Twin Cities with Alex and his friends, who I'm told I HAVE to meet...they sound pretty cool, and if they're anything like Alex, they are

Day 7: St. Paul to Chicago, Illinois (where I'm told we might be able to spend the night at Dwight's aunt's house on the lake)

Day 8: Chicago to Pittsburgh

According to the current plan, I'll be back sometime in the afternoon/evening of the 30th. I'm taking my dad's really nice digital camera and a notebook, so I'll be out of touch on the trip, but when I come back I'll have a plethora of excellent pictures and a daily log of the trip, similar to what I did for the Canada trip last August...and I'll put it here so you all can read about it.

4 days till I leave...and it's aggravating that I even have to wait that long. I'm so excited I'm already having dreams at night of being on the plane.

Oh, and if anyone has any ideas about what to do during my 4-hour layover at the Denver airport, don't hesitate to comment. Any and all ideas accepted, just so long as they don't get me arrested. I'll bring a book or something anyway, but still. I want better ideas.

Next time I post will likely be after the trip, so you all have a wonderful 2 weeks - I'm sure I'll talk to some of you before I leave anyway.
