In my expeirence those travelling in Couch on trains (10-20 hour trips) are the poor college student and the older middle aged adults too afraid to fly, occasionally with kids who go insane from having to sit still for so long.

Though, I did run into one of my professors on Amtrak once.

I have no idea what the sleeper car crowd looks like. Probably less crazy people at least. and yeah, more people with disposible income.
