!!ZOMGWTFBBQ!!
I have not watched a movie this intense in the theater since Black Hawk Down. This may have something to do with my worst fears - drowning or being exposed to the vacuum of space - but I had to prepare myself for this screening. It still didn't help - not immediately anyway. In my anticipation of what was to come, I found myself shaking from the tension in my body before anything even happened, and the amount of palm sweat generated probably could've filled a small bucket. Instead it soaked through Shelby's jeans on his left knee.
IT IS A MUST SEE IN THE THEATER. I don't think you will truly feel the experience if you watch it on your flat screen at home. Also, 3D enhances it, as it was written and made for 3D, so it is true 3D (although Cuaron condones IMAX as well). I am already calling it for Best VFX Oscar at next year's ceremony and will bet Sandra Bullock gets a nod. Do not be surprised to see this one also appear in the director, picture, cinematographer, sound mixing, sound editing, and possibly original screenplay and film editing categories.
Alfonso Cuaron and David Heyman joined us for a q&a after the 90 minutes were over and explained why it took 4 1/2 years to make this film. They had to develop new technology with the help of Chivo, Alfonso's go to DP for many many years now, and WB VFX Head, Chris DeFaria, that involved lightboxes, robotic arms (like from car manufacturing plants), and choreographed movements for the actors in every scene they shot. Together w/ VFX house Framestore, they previsualized and created what we see on the screen. The lightbox contraptions that encased George and Sandra, Cuaron said he couldn't even lift the arms with his own after watching them endure the choreography and trying for himself. He is a very humble, self-deprecating, and humorous individual yet extremely earnest in his art. He does not want to give the audience something he himself would not like to see, so he doesn't give up until he gets it right - hence, the 4 1/2 years in making this film...and a super toned Bullock.
I don't want to get into the plot. Other reviews can spoil that for you. I want to emphasize this film for the experience - what you don't know will only make it that much better for you when you sit in front of the screen. I highly recommend this film. It will no doubt be one of the top ten on many 2013 end of year lists, including mine.
