My last day of work was Friday, Sept 2nd. I picked up Shelby that evening, and we headed to the Call of Duty event that was happening in Marina del Rey. Dropkick Murphys were the show ending the first day of the convention, so we were going to enjoy them. It was fun, but we totally forgot our earplugs. It was the first time they had played a video game event, so it was kinda weird for them, but it was great seeing them live. We went home afterward b/c Saturday was the first day of the fair, and we were planning on hitting the $1 entry fee window.
We got to Pomona around 11am and were stuck in pretty crazy lines both for parking and ticketing but managed to get in before noon, well before the $1 entry disappeared. Starving, I wanted to find the maple bacon donut right away. It was at the Texas size donut stand and man, it was tasty. I will rank it up there with the deep fried Klondike bar from last year.
We tooled around the shopping area first and bought a few things this year which we hadn't intended, but I am looking forward to stirring up a couple of the dip mixes we bought. We went to the livestock area and had our usual annual milks, took pictures of the bunnies, saw the goats, cows, bees, and pigs before hitting up Chicken Charlie's for the deep fried riblets. They were only okay sadly. The sauce was too much and too sour. After a romp through the cultural toy exhibit, we made our way to the wine tent for our annual best in show tastings. B/c we got in for $1, we bought two flights again this year. On our way over, we found food truck alley and saw Crepes Bonaparte, a truck we've wanted to taste since seeing them on the 1st food truck race season. We bought the southwest crepe and weren't disappointed. I am now totally curious about Berlin Brats tho.
Anyways, the best in shows weren't all that spectacular this year. The petite sirah was the clear winner. I need to find that sheet and post like i did last year. After the wine we continued around and stood in line for the Coca Cola tent where I learned so many people are still stupid even when the answers to questions are repeatedly given before and after a question is asked to win t-shirts. I walked out with a t-shirt but the website wasn't working that evening, and I haven't checked it since.
We were able to see the food winners before they had collapsed or melted and were yet again impressed by the craftiness of the clothesmakers and the table settings. We dreamed of outdoor bbqs and hot tubs and sat in Scion's version of a Smart car and were thoroughly disappointed in the design. You lose this one, Toyota. We're eager to test drive a Fiat now.
We stayed longer than we did last year, but it's still the same old fun fair we know and have been attending for a long while. It was time to go home and pack for our Mexico trip. That will be another entry.
