david arquette
made a movie - he wrote, produced, and directed it. it's called
the tripper. we think
oslowe would enjoy and appreciate its kitsch factor. the tripper's cast and crew screening was last nite at the majestic crest theatre in westwood. david invited everyone from icoe to join him and celebrate.
after a quick bite at zankou,
shelbyg and i walked over to the majestic. man, courtney cox is TINY! various character actors peppered the line. i saw
a costume designer i had worked with but couldn't remember his name until i saw that he designed the costumes for the movie.
bobby bukowski dp'd the flick, but i didn't see him at the afterparty. i don't even know if i would recognize him now. i keep running into the
girl from carnivale. she was behind us to get in the theatre and sat in our row. i think that makes it 4 events now. eventually i will work with her...or just keep running into her at various events with mutual people involved.
the movie seemed long for its brief 98 minutes. it's apparent david was heavily influenced by 70s horror a la early wes craven and texas chainsaw, but he had the humor of peter jackson in there as well. he did a great job. his brother, richmond, looks and sounds like a heavier set version of himself. thomas jane gave 3 dimensions to his 2 dimensional sheriff, and paul reubens even did a scene that reminded me totally of buffy the vampire slayer...the movie...you know, the one he and david were both in.
afterward, we went to the karaoke room at the westwood brewing company for the private afterparty. they had free booze and a buffet spread. we grabbed seats beside the dj. he had an impressive collection of 17,000 songs in a karaoke machine that holds over 10 times that. while the dj was gearing up for the crowd to settle so karaoke could begin, he asked us if he should play the peewee song from the 80s - the rap one that used the peewee dance. we told him he should totally do it, and we saw paul reubens make his way for the door during the song. he didn't leave although we joked that the dj had scared him off. paul later came to the dj and shook his hand.
shelby opened the first song book, prompting david to essentially challenge him to sing. of course, shelby did.
shelby belted out "only the good die young" by billy joel to kick off the karaoke portion of the evening and pay homage to the serial killer movie we had just seen. he had signed up to sing way before david took the mic and told everyone who sang they'd get a tripper tee. david happily gave him the first shirt.
my highlight of the evening was seeing mr. patricia arquette walk the room. wow, he's hot in person. love them dimples!
we left after josh hammond sang "sweet caroline" and before marsha thomason took the mic. the crowd was thinning, and it was a school nite, otherwise shelby woulda sang another song. he even thought of "dancing in the dark" but i told him that would look like he was kissing david's ass.
