Is Mexican food healthier or lower in calories than the average type of food? Just wondering, because I don't feel anywhere near as 'heavy' as would after eating normal food (portion size same

Depends very much on the food in question, and at least partly on how 'authentic' it is. A lot of 'Mexican' food you buy here is heavy on the cheddar, which I don't think is particularly traditional. Corn chips also tend to be high in fat, which translates to high in calories.
If you were to have a traditional meal of tortille, beans, and vegetables, it would be low in calories - at least, low in fat and high in fibre, vitamins, and all that other good stuff. If you have nachos drowned in cheese and sour cream, you have high fat food.
Try Pepe's. There's one on Baroona Rd, in Milton. I don't know enough about Mexican food to know if they're truly 'authentic', but they're damn tasty (and don't skimp on the chilli).
Ah. Thinking about the 'heavy' or 'light' feeling, that could be related to the chilli. Eating chillies sets off an endorphin surge in your body - you do tend to feel a bit lighter afterwards, and rather chilled out. =)
I'm not so sure that authentic Mexican food is any healthier. All of my experience of Central and South American food is that they generally don't consider fat content at all and are often overly generous with it

All fair points, and I think it comes down to the first thing I said, which was "depends on what food you're eating". I've not been to South America at all, and my knowledge of the various cuisines (Mexican or otherwise) is fairly limited. I have a friend who spent some time in Honduras, and she said that they eat very little dairy, mostly tortille and beans and vegetables. But again, that's not Mexico exactly, and we didn't really discuss fat content in depth.
I also suspect that a lot of the fat content is countered by portion size - just extrapolating from other non-Western cultures, I would guess that 'traditional' Mexican portion sizes are probably a bit smaller than we're used to in the West. But that's just a guess.
My feeling is that the 'light' feeling that comes from Mexican food can be attributed mostly to the chillies. I get the same feeling from good Indian, Thai, or Vietnamese foods - and they're not always low-fat foods. At least not the ones I choose. *grin*
(NOPE). Pepe's pepe's were good & #1 for me for a long time, especially when they had their awesome place in taringa. milton Pepe's has never been as good as Taringa one was, but i would still go there on account of it being Pepes.
due to an extremely crap level of service, the milton pepe's has finally sucessfully managed to piss me off so much i never wanna go there again. (last straw: taking about 2 hrs for us to get a meal that should only take about 3/4 hr max. even if they're busy. made us late for our game even tho we booked allowing plenty (1&3/4hrs) of time to eat & get where we were going, zero attempt to make it up to us in any way & not so much as an acknowledgement of their crapness, let alone an expression of apology! *growl* o yeah. we *were* on time for our booking.) not cool Pepe's. not cool.
(YEA!). El TORITOSrecently got a chance to try out El Torito's & everything about it from the food, to the in-house drinks, to the absolutely 1st rate & friendly service & even the price!!! made me give El Torito's a
