At this point, a hypothetical question, but, depending on the answer(s) - so, depending on you - soon to not be hypothetical ( Read more... )

1 are you looking for space in which to exhibit your work?
Always looking :D

2 how much would you be willing to pay, as a weekly rental rate, for such a space?
I have no idea - I've had experience exhibiting with KILN but that's about it. Suffice to say, I don't have much $$$ but then again, I don't have much exposure. Who knows what I could afford if I was selling all the time!

3 would you maybe just like to clear an overflow of old pieces from your home/studio, and could use some extra storage space?
When I start getting into bigger works this could be the case.

4 if yes to 3, how much could you afford for said storage space?
No idea as yet.

5 what kind of work is it? What media? More than one?
I work primarily on small paper supports, but I'm hoping to move to wood just as soon as I find some suitable surfaces and suppliers.

6 is the work difficult to categorise? Hard to pin down a pigeonhole for? (if so, so much the better ;) )
Right now I fit very easily into the low brow/ works on paper sort of category. I'd love to do installations too.

7 how much space do you feel you could fill, on a weekly, daily, or even hourly basis?
As I look around my office, I think I could easily curate something with the work I've got within these four walls (if I didn't rent, ha!) It's maybe 3x3m.

8 does, for instance, roughly 2.3 sqm sound like a fair standard space? (keep in mind that size applies to both wall and floor space, and that the dimensions are fairly fixed.)
That does sound fair and workable.

9 and does, then, $10 - $20 sound like a reasonable weekly rate for such a standard space? What sort of deposit would you be willing to pay to secure a space?
Sounds great. I paid $200 deposit at KILN for a show that lasts for around a month.

10 would you rather pay a commission, to an established 'reputable' gallery, or a reasonable rental fee to an emerging venue, after which all income from the sale of your work is entirely yours?
I think the rental fee sounds interesting, but I'd like to know more!

11 would you be interested in displaying work in an artist-run initiative that gives you, financially and aesthetically, as much guidance or autonomy as you require? As you request?
This sounds fabulous!!! As an "emerging artist" I'm really just feeling around right now. I don't know what I'm doing, and if it's right or wrong!

12 how important is a gallery's location to you? Does it HAVE to be in the city or Valley to be taken seriously? What matters most about where and how a gallery is to be found?
I really don't know about this - it'd be nice to get away from the Valley/arts thing. So long as it was accessible by public transport, I think people would come. Especially if there were fabulous events thrown!

13 what sort of demographic (sorry, I don't like that word much either) is your work most likely to appeal to? Who's it, if anyone, 'aimed' at?
I have found that women respond to my more figurative work, while male respond to the graphical and harder elements. I guess it's split really. Insofar as age groups - I've had interest from age groups perhaps from 25-50.

14 lastly - how close to ready do you feel you are to exhibiting? Got work ready to go? Keen to discuss rates and deposits?
Depending on the expectations for showing the art (mounted/ framed/ pinned) I am ready! I have a show starting at the end of July, and am anticipating a quite hectic month, but really desperately want to work on my own personal stuff in August.

:D :D :D

was very much hoping you'd respond - love the work/drafts you regularly post.

And funnily enough, I just passed KILN in Paddington not half an hour ago. What are their rates like? Will go give 'em a proper checking out tomorrow...

When you say paper supports - you're working in watercolours and inks, and would need framing assistance?

Re wood - (caveat here, I'm an ex-employee of the venue I'm about to recommend) would Reverse Garbage be likely to be of any help? They have a very wide selection of timber offcuts, a great deal of which is breathtakingly beautiful material!

I'd hardly call your work low-brow, but there's definitely an occasional feel of the burlesque to it, which would be most, most welcome!

3 x 3 or close to, we can definitely do for you - maybe 2, or 1 & 1/2 standard sizes, or 'FLATS', as we'll be calling them?

There'll be a sliding scale of spaces available, from a single POSTCARD or even an A5 FLYER, up to whole walls, or even the whole space, if someone wants to book us out for a dedicated exhibit. And any of those spaces can be hired for as long as one likes, for just an hour, or a month, or - whatever.

All media and a whole gamut of content welcome - we do tend towards the cheeky and the tongue in cheek, in our general aesthetic and ethical approach, though, so anything that reinforces that is a huge bonus. Installations definitely welcome - floor space is rated on the same scale as wall space. For anything that needs both, well, we're willing to negotiate - probably a '1 & a 1/2' space rate...

more about the rental rate? see just above for a few more of the basics - terms for things like the entire space, or an entire wall, will depend on the size of the space we find. Always willing to answer further questions.

No harm in being new - we're, obviously, new ourselves. And while we're still feeling our way around in terms of what the market can currently bear, we've got some pretty clear ideas regarding what's 'right' and what's 'wrong'. Most importantly, we feel that the display of work is a two way street, and unless both parties are happy, the whole situation's made of fail. So we'll bend over backwards to help you trust your instincts, and hope that you'll trust ours to some degree too.

I def hear you re the Valley: just looking at lease costs there is giving me coronaries. I'd like to be around other galleries, just to point up the marked differences in ethos, but that's not entirely necessary. We're also looking a little further out - West End, The Gabba, Albion, and even further, among admittedly industrial areas like Geebung, Virginia, Northgate and Fairfield/Yeerongpilly, the advantages of which are the distinct rate drops, and still reliable train/bus access.

Primarily, we're concerned that there's both public transport and foot traffic, generated by a reasonable clump of other retail businesses (partly regardless of business type). Nundah's also under consideration.

Oh, and you can bet your sweet tax bonus there'll be shiny events! The project's parent company will be producing theatre, and for the gallery there'll DEF be live music, burlesque, stand-up - whatever feels right for the night. We'll very much be taking a leaf out of the CBD Gallery book there, and doing something awesome on hopefully a weekly basis.

*nods to demographics* am, as mentioned above, familiar with your work (a least, some of it) and yeah, wholeheartedly agree.

We'll be making a move into a premises within 5 - 6 weeks, and will be hopefully ready to open to the public within no more than a month after that. So - late August/Early September, possibly?

Thanks again!

Live events? Tell me more! I do stuff for productions and events and I'm also an emerging burlesque/circus/improv/etc performer :)

Yes, we'll be looking at burlesque, stand up comedy, impro, live music, whatever sounds like fun, and isn't, perhaps, being seen much at the moment. So the doors are open re suggestions, there.

We'll also be using part of the space as a dedicated rehearsal/possibly performance venue for a variety of theatrical projects, which are also in the planning stages as we speak...
