Movie Chatter

Jan 11, 2009 00:24

Everyone know I'm a film buff. I love to talk movies. I used to be so updated with the current films...I would purposely see all the films up for nominations during Oscar season, and in the summer I got free movies by working in a theatre. Then I became broke and movie ticket prices soared. I still watch movies, but I have resorted to Netflix which is much cheaper and I watch dozens of movies per month (not always great ones). I don't know why I haven't seen any movie since I got home...we do have discount theatres. I probably will see a couple, whether with friends or my parents sometime in the next week (I can't believe I leave in a week; lazy days are almost gone). Namely Milk and Benjamin Button, both of which I'd like to see. It's a shame I didn't see them earlier since Golden Globes are upon us and I'm not familiar with any of the films...should I even bother to watch? Most films I can wait until dvd since I'd rather not spend a small fortune on a ticket...but there are some I just will not wait for. Oh by the way, the new Underworld film is coming out soon...not sure exactly when, though. Underworld is how I like my vampires and werewolves portrayed.

Anyways, I stumbled across some movie lists and wanted to place my input on them. So here we go:

Best Movies of 2008

(Counting down from 50)

50. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I've never seen any of the Indiana films, and I don't know if I ever will..

49. Burn After Reading

I heard it was really good, but the plot didn't look interesting to me.

48. Mamma Mia!

I just saw it recently. It's a fun movie, but that's about it. Not my favourite musical.

47. The Bank Job

Never heard of it...apparently it's about robbery and jewels, etc. Not terribly interested.

46. Bolt

Aww, it's a cute film. I saw it over Thanksgiving. About a dog who thinks he's really the character he plays in a TV show. During one scene, I spotted Avid on a computer. :)

45. Son of Rambow

I admit, I don't know anything about Rambow. And I don't care to either.

44. W.

A film that sets out to solely make fun of Bush? Oh, how I want to see this!

43. Quantum of Solace

I'm not a fan of James Bond and probably never will be. He's like the male version of Mary Sue...he's Larry Lou.

42. Defiance

Never heard of it before. Apparently it's a WWII film. With Liev Schreiber. I'm interested.

41. The Duchess

It's in my Netflix queue.

40. Appaloosa

Looks like some Western film. I hate Westerns.

39. Wanted

It's next on my Netflix queue, but it's a loong wait.

38. Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Looks pretty funny, actually.

37. Boy A

Don't know much about this one, but apparently it's about a guy who spent most of his childhood in jail. Not very interested.

36. Religulous

I heard this was really good. I'd like to see it.

35. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Just another one of those silly comedies. Not terribly interested.

34. American Teen

A documentary. The reality version of a high school film. Might be interesting..

33. Planet B-Boy

A documentary about breakdancing. I like dance. But not big on breakdancing.

32. Horton Hears a Who!

I just watched it tonight. It was cute, but not perfect.

31. Rachel Getting Married

I want to see this. Anne Hathaway looks like she did a good job in it.

30. Dear Zachary

I saw a trailer for this and it looks really sad. It's a documentary made by friends to remember a man who was murdered. And the woman who murdered him was pregnant with his son.

29. Let the Right One In

A Swedish film about a boy who lives next door to a vampire. Another vampire/human love story...but this one is done right because in pictures, she's all bloody. I should see it. :)

28. Pineapple Express

Ugh, this looks like a really stupid movie.

27. The Wackness

Never heard of it, apparently some comedy drama about a teen. Not interested.

26. 4 Months, 2 Weeks, 3 Days

A Romanian film about a friend who helps a friend arrange an illegal abortion. Sound intriguing. I'd like to see it.

25. Gran Torino

Meh, I'm not a huge fan of Clint Eastwood films...

24. Happy-Go-Lucky

Sounds like a simple film. I'm not sure I want to see it, though.

23. Taxi to the Dark Side

Never heard of it before, but apparently it's a documentary about US torture practices. Sounds interesting...and I can watch it instantly on Netflix. *adds to instant queue*

22. Shine a Light

A Rolling Stones doc by Scorcese? No thanks.

21. Revolutionary Road

I've heard a lot about it, but I'm not interested in seeing it.

20. Kung Fu Panda

Hmm...I haven't seen that one yet. I probably will eventually.

19. In Bruges

I simply want to see it because it was film in Bruges and I've been there...

18. Doubt

I watched a clip from the film and it actually looks really interesting. Spectacular acting.

17. JCVD

Hmm...never heard of it. Not interested.

16. Role Models

I thought this film looked stupid. Yet it's high on the list...

15. Surfwise

A surfing documentary? Nah.

14. Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Meh, I'm not exactly interested in seeing it..

13. The Counterfeiters

A German Nazi-era film. I might be willing to see it.

12. The Reader

It looks really good.

11. The Visitor

Hmm...it's looks alright, I suppose.

10. Tropic Thunder

It looks like one of those films that could be either really funny or really stupid. I don't know if I'll see it.

9. Milk

A biopic of Harvey Milk. I so want to see this.

8. Man on Wire

In my Netflix instant queue.

7. Wall-E

I think this might be the best Pixar film so far. I really do love it.

6. Frost/Nixon

While it's supposed to be really good, I personally don't have interest in it.

5. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I've been wanting to see this film since I first heard of it in the summer. It just sounds so intriguing. Also, I found out it premiered here in Boise on December 10. Frank Marshall loves Idaho...he's premiered the Bourne films here (Matt Damon came for one) and Seabiscuit too.

4. The Wrestler

A film about a wrestler? No thanks!

3. The Dark Knight

I finally saw it on Christmas. I was good, but I wouldn't call it the best movie ever. But it made me miss Heath Ledger again.

2. Slumdog Millionaire

They kept advertising this film through my school. Guess I should've seen it. Especially since it would've been free...

1. Iron Man

My first thought is why the hell is this #1? Surely it's not the best film of the year! And no, I don't want to see it.

Films that should've been on the list:

Prince Caspian

Some may disagree, but I almost found this film better than the first. Probably because it's a bit darker. And also they made my least favourite Narnia book really interesting. I'm sad it didn't do as well at the box office. It deserves to be on the list because it's certainly better than some of the films up there.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Saw a pre-screening and it was AMAZING. And horribly sad. But what can you expect...it's a WWII film. And it's interesting to see Holocaust from the Nazi side.

Best Movie Bets of 2009 (some of which are meh and others I just can't wait)

(Counting down from 40)

40. Race to Witch Mountain (March 19): A children's science fiction film about a couple of alien kids with powers who happen to be protected by The Rock.

I saw the trailer, and it actually doesn't look half bad for Disney. Nothing I'd get terribly excited about, though.

39. Duplicity (March 13) : A romance film about two spies working together on a con.

Meh. It's supposed to be big because it has Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. But I could care less...

38. 2012 (July 10): Remember that ancient Mayan prophecy? It comes true.

Another ridiculous "end of the world" film. Seems to be a lot of those lately...

37. He's Just Not That Into You (February 6): A comedy romance about interpreting human behaviour.

An all-star cast. Could be funny. Wouldn't waste my money on it. I'll watch it through Netflix.

36. Hannah Montana: The Movie (April 10): What do you think it's about?

*screamscriesgroans* Can someone please kill Miley Cyrus? I just can't stand all the fandom anymore. I hate all the pop stars Disney produces. And they all turn out to be sluts.

35. Land of the Lost (June 5): Based on some tv show with dinosaurs, apparently.

Has Will Ferrell and Anna Friel (from Pushing Daisies). I've never heard of it...and there's no trailer out yet.

34. I Love You, Man (March 20): A comedy about a guy who searches for a best man for his wedding.

Looks pretty stupid. And anyway, what's wrong with having a best woman? My brother-in-law had one...

33. Fame (September 25): A remake of a musical about performing art students.

I haven't seen the original yet. I should do that first.

32. Amelia (October 23): A biopic of Amelia Earhart (played by Hilary Swank).

Amelia Earhart rocks my world, so of course I'll see it. Oh, and did I mention the Ninth Doctor's in it? (he plays Fred Noonan, who disappeared with Amelia) :D

31. A Christmas Carol (November 6): Another version of Dickens' story...but with motion capture.

Hmm...hopefully it's decent. I'm not sure about the motion capture thing. Sometimes it turns out good and other times not so great.

30. The Informant (September 18): A based on real life drama about a man who brings down his own company by exposing them.

Matt Damon really packs on the pounds for this role. I'm not sure I'm terribly interested in the story though.

29. Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience (February 27): Exactly what it says.

Just as bad as Hannah Montana. The newest boy band. It makes me wanna cry.

28. The Soloist (April 24) : The friendship of a journalist and a homeless musician.

I saw the trailer. While the acting looks well done, I'm not very interested in the story.

27. The Taking of Pelham 123 (July 24) : A remake thriller about the hijacking of a New York subway train.

I like thrillers. Could be interesting. The release date's pretty far off to say more.

26. G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra (August 7) : Bringing the toys to life.

I was never interested in the toy. Why would I care for this?

25. Funny People (July 31): A comedy-drama with Adam Sandler.

I don't know much about it. I'll need to hear more.

24. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (July 1): The third part to the Ice Age movies.

Wait, didn't the dinosaurs come before the Ice Age? The sequel wasn't as good as the original, so I don't know how good this one will be...

23. 17 Again (April 17): About a man who get to do-over his teenage years.

At first I groaned at this. But after watching the trailer, it doesn't look that bad. Like something I'd watch on Netflix for fun. Not a huge fan of Zac Efron though.

22. The Wolf Man (November 6): A remake of the classic werewolf movie.

What's that, a werewolf film? I'm in!

21. Where the Wild Things Are (October 16): About a boy who imagines a world filled with monsters.

I read the book as a little kid, therefore I'm excited. I wonder where my book is...I need to reread it..

20. The Year One (June 19): A comedy that takes place in pre-historic times.

I don't know...looks pretty dumb.

19. Shutter Island (October 2): About the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from the hospital for the criminally insane.

Interesting story about this. The movie was film in Boston (not while I was there), and one of the rigging grips (I think his name is Todd) was a former student of my professor and came to visit us and teach us to tie proper knots and work on cinematography. He told us that during shooting there was an equipment accident because a knot wasn't tied properly and came undone. I think it destroyed either a camera or a light, and I think a crew member barely jumped out of the way in time. Making a minor mistake like not tying a knot right can be both expensive and fatal. Which is why you must learn to tie knots as a filmmaker (though I'm actually planning to be in post where knots don't matter). About the film...it looks pretty good. It's a Scorsese film (my professor told us he's a dick in person, heh) with an all-star cast, so you know it's gonna be a hit.

18. Monsters vs. Aliens (March 27): Another kids 3D film.

Looks like one of those that could either be really cute or totally suck. We'll have to wait and see to take our pick...

17. Angels and Demons (May 15): The prequel to The DaVinci Code.

I was so excited for The DaVinci Code, then extremely disappointed after seeing it. But I know people who didn't read the book and loved it. So I think this time I won't read the book first, then I'll see how I feel. Oh, and apparently Howard was banned from filming in any Catholic Church; no surprise there...

16. New Moon (November 20): The sequel to Twilight.

Gah, all this Twilight fandom is pissing me off! I hate that the mere mentioning of vampires and werewolves anymore see to have to relate back to the movie and books. And honestly, if I do read the book or see the movie, I'd probably like it. But I can't bring myself to until the craziness wears off a bit (if it ever does). I think what bothers me most are all the fangirls...I hate them! And in my opinion, Edward does NOT look like a proper vampire. I don't see blood dripping off his face... (okay, I've already ranted about this before)

15. The Road (TBA): A post-apocalyptic film.

It has Viggo Mortensen in it, so it might be good...

14. Sherlock Holmes (November 20): About the detective, of course.

Omg, there are so many TV shows and movies about this character I had trouble finding the most recent upcoming film on imdb. I've never been interested in Sherlock Holmes, so I can't say much on the subject.

13. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (June 26): Sequel to the first film.

I saw the first film, which was okay. Entertaining at least. But I didn't pay to see it (because of my job at the theatre), and I wouldn't pay to see the second one either.

12. Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian (May 22): Sequel to the first film, but in DC.

Meh, I hate when sequels are made for films when they're not actually necessary to the story. We'll see how it turns out, but I think it may just be a disappointment...

11. The Lovely Bones (December 11): About a murdered girl who watches over her family.

Peter Jackson's anticipated film. I guess it's based on a popular novel, but I know nothing about it.

10. Up (May 29): About an old man who flies via balloons to South America. Except an unwanted guest has stowed-away.

The latest Pixar film. So of course it should be good.

9. Inglourious Basterds (August 21): The latest Nazi film. Oh, and did I mention it's by Quentin Tarantino?

I'm a Tarantino fan...I like his style. So I'll be watching it.

8. Avatar (December 18): A human vs. alien film by James Cameron. Will be shot in 3D.

The release date is a looong ways away. We'll see what happens.

7. Public Enemies (July 1): A movie about gangsters set in the 1930s.

I don't care much for gangster films. But then again, it's got Johhny Depp in it. Oh my.

6. Star Trek (May 8): No need to give a storyline...though it is about the early years.

I don't watch Star Trek, so I have no interest in this. Though I'm sure there are many others who are excited.

5. Watchmen (March 6): Based on the graphic novels. It's about super heroes.

While I don't read graphic novels, this does look interesting. I love this type of film: dark and artistic.

4. Bruno (May 15): About a gay fashionista from Austria.

I'm not exactly a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen, so I can't say I'm terribly interested in this.

3. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May 1): About the origins of Wolverine.

I'm not excited about this because it's Wolverine, but because Liev Schreiber plays Sabretooth!

2. Terminator: Salvation (May 22): The fourth Terminator film, taking place after judgement day.

I admit, I'm a Terminator fan. So I'm looking forward to this, and it'll be different than the others with its setting in the future.

1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (July 17): Do I really need to summarise?

Hurrah! I've been waiting a long time for this. Only six months to go...even though we should've seen it already. Damn you Twilight!

That took me forever. I'm such a film buff! :P
