The big news around here (really, it's been in the papers) is that the Shatti cinema is getting a 3D movie projector. They'd hoped to get it set up and running last week, but didn't make it. So it's first showing was today.
It was showing Clash of the Titans, so my roommate and I went. We managed to go just as the cinema opened and got tickets to the first showing, so we were at the first 3D movie in Oman. That, at least, is kinda cool.
There was someone there taking pictures, so I might even be in the newspaper for standing in line to watch the movie. Whoo hoo!
-----
As for the movie watching. They had previews of Toy Story 2 in 3D, and those previews were pretty cool and very 3D'ish.
Then Clash of the Titans started.
Wow.
I think it's probably the worst movie I've seen in, uhm, I can't quite remember. Let's just say a very long time. And although the 3D effects were there, they were minimal (and nothing compared to the preview for Toy Story 2. :( )
As for the movie itself... for those of you who are like me and into Greek mythology/legends and consequently go see anything related but haven't seen this one yet.... Have no fear. Prior knowledge of the story of Perseus won't impact your movie viewing.
I was thinking of listing all the things that were off from the actual myth, but then I realized I didn't know where to start. It just plain wasn't the story of Perseus. So instead, here are the things that it did use from the actual myth.
------
The hero's name is Perseus, and he is a demigod.
There are also characters named Andromeda, Cassiopia, and Acrisius. Cassiopia is actually full of hubris like her namesake. There are also gods named Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades.
Perseus rides Pegasus.
The witches he consults all share one eye.
He kills Medusa.
I think that's about where the similarities to the real story ends.
(BTW, some of you classicists might have silly notions such as killing medusa somehow involving a polished shield/mirror. But those are just silly notions. After all, why would he need a mirror when he's got DJINN who ride giant scorpions fighting with him?!)
Oh, and in case you're wondering, the reason he kills Medusa is he needs her head so he can use it to kill the Kraken.
---------
Of course, all of the above is just the movie. Never mind the horrible acting, dialogue, and annoying special effects. But hey, if none of the above bothers you, go see the movie. :)
