That morning, Nothing woke up giddy. There was a charge in the air. It was a little cooler, and if he shut his eyes, he could almost imagine the smell of autumn. He pressed a kiss to Tobi's shoulder where his face had been resting, unfolding from their bed and stumbling outside with nothing but his leather jacket wrapped around him.

Wandering over to the tree in their front yard, he reached up a pale hand and brushed a finger over the cool plastic of the grinning skull dangling from the branches, the garishly white plastic skeleton clanking hollowly overhead. Slowly, a grin crept up onto Nothing's face and he dashed back inside. Within minutes they were both trudging up to the compound, pointing at the decorations all around that were childish and exciting all at once. Nothing never cared all that much for Halloween. Why do you need a bunch of dumb kids running around pleading for candy while everyone forgot the real point of the holiday. What about the lost souls?

What about him?

But this year was different. It hadn't been a conscious decision, but when he plunged his hand into the clothes box and came up with a pair of plastic fangs, his mind had been made up for him. For once, it felt okay to make fun of himself a little bit.

The bathroom was crowded, but they needed the mirror, both of them crammed in with the other people hurrying to get themselves dressed. Nothing had a tiny bottle of spirit gum in his hand and a latex bite mark prosthetic in the other. Smirking and stepping closer to the other boy, he said, "Hold still. You'll hardly feel a thing."
