Eleventh Hour; Coffee Table Science; Jacob/Rachel; Experiment; G/no spoilers awanderingbard July 23 2009, 18:30:03 UTC
1 AM

Hood is sitting cross-legged on the floor in the middle of the hotel lobby. On the coffee table in front of him is about a billion rock samples, five oranges, three hotel pens, a pad of hotel paper, six coffee filters, ten elastic bands, a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, a glass of champagne and a bowl of milk.

Rachel has no idea what he’s going to do with them.

She sits in the armchair by the coffee table, thankful that, at one in the morning, the only witnesses are herself and the girl working the check-in counter.

She’s been up for twenty-four hours already. She’s used to no sleep and she’s not tired. She just really, really wants to take off her bra. No one should have to wear a bra for twenty-four hours straight.

“Okay,” Hood says, in that eager way he has when he’s about to Do Science. He looks like a little kid at a My First Chemistry Set. It’s adorable. “Let’s begin...”

2 AM

You know, would Hood even notice if she took off her bra? He’s pretty oblivious when he’s geniusing it up. In fact, he’s pretty oblivious all the time. She could probably take it off right here and he would just go on experimenting. The check-in-counter girl would probably mind, though. She’s fussed enough about the science fair going on in her lobby.

“How’s it going?” Rachel asks, shifting in the armchair to get a better look. Two oranges are gone and she suspects she’s going to have to buy another glass of champagne soon.

“I think I’ve almost got it,” Hood says. His focus is incredible. He hasn’t moved from the spot on the floor. He’s waved away all her offers to get him food or coffee.

Rachel has learned, in Hood talk, ‘I’ve almost got it’ means they’ve got awhile to go still. He has no concept of time when he’s working. If she asked him right now how long he thought he’d be at it, he’s probably give his usual answer of ‘oh, a little while’. That’s why Rachel’s here. To keep him alive and keep him punctual.

She sits back in the chair and settles in for a long wait.

3 AM

The check-in-counter girl has brought her a cup of coffee, which was nice. Hood’s is untouched and she’s contemplating taking it for herself. He won’t notice.

She’s reaching for it, when he suddenly comes alive and grabs her hand. She nearly squeaks in surprise, but restrains herself.

“I’ve got it!” he says, triumphantly. God, his eyes are gorgeous when they light up like that. He squeezes her hand in excitement. “I can fix it!”

She smiles, easily catching his enthusiasm. In a much more reserved, appropriate-for-a-special-agent way, of course. “Great. Good job.”

He leaps to his feet, pulling her up with him. She’s steady, but his legs are wobbly, probably from sitting on the floor for so long. They bump into each other. Rachel steadies him.

His face his very close to hers and his brow furrows in thought. He bends in his head even closer to hers and their lips almost touch. Her breath is catching in her throat.

He sniffs. “When did you get coffee?” he asks.

She blinks in surprise. Then she laughs, leaning into him slightly, her forehead touching his chin. He smiles, bewildered at her amusement.

“C’mon, Einstein, we’ve got a world to save,” she says.

She pulls him toward the door, his hand still in hers. Her bra will just have to wait.

He is so cute when he's on his way back to 'consciousness' after being all oblivious.

No one should have to wear a bra for twenty-four hours straight.
They really *shouldn't*
