Qui-Gon was not a man easy to surprise. Apprentices had been trying for years to startle him, but until that morning, he had been reasonably confident of his ability to cope with whatever came his way in a calm, cool and collected manner.

Therefore, when the door to the apartment he shared with his Padawan learner Obi-Wan Kenobi slammed open to reveal the younger man Qui-Gon was sure that whatever it was that was making his Padawan act as though he was being chased by a Rancor would not pose much of a problem.

He rose from his seat at the table and crossed the room to the doorway where Obi was stood, hyperventilating, the door still vibrating slightly from where he had slammed it shut.

“Obi, what’s wrong?”

The younger man struggled to breathe, panting as he fought to overcome his rising panic. “Out there, I’m not going out again until it’s gone.”

Qui-Gon looked at his apprentice in surprise and reopened the door. He couldn’t remember the last time his Padawan had been scared. Nervous maybe, or foolish, but not scared. He peered around the edge of the doorway. Nothing. The corridor was empty. He looked back at the younger man in confusion.

“Obi, there’s nothing there.”

Obi shuddered but gamely peered around the doorframe before pulling back with a cry. “There!”

Qui-Gon looked. There, scurrying across the floor, was a little white mouse. It couldn’t have been longer than his little finger, and it was quite happily ignoring the two men in the doorway as it looked for food.

“Obi, it’s a mouse.”

“I know!”

“It’s tiny.”

“I don’t care, I’m not going out there again until it’s gone!”

Qui sighed in amusement, his surprise giving way to a bemused grin at the thought of his apprentice being scared of mice.

“Do you want me to get rid of it?”

“Please.” Obi knew he sounded pathetic, but he couldn’t help it. He just couldn’t stand how they scampered around, with their twitchy noses and…uggh. No, he didn’t like mice.

Qui-Gon calmly walked out into the corridor and coaxed the little thing into his hand. Standing up he headed for the nearest lift.

“I’ll be back soon, you go to class.”

Obi sighed in relief and carefully stepped into the corridor, keeping a wary eye out for more mice. It was a shame he’d had to reveal his secret to his master, after all, he’d kept it hidden for eight years, but he really couldn’t stand the things. He headed off to class quickly, aware that he was in danger of being late. If he was lucky by the time news of his phobia reached his classmates he would be off on another mission. Sure, his master would tease him about it, but he could live with that. After all, there was so much he knew about his master that could be used as blackmail.
