Into the Black, Part I: A Final Briefing

Mar 02, 2007 03:54

Zed's been spending most of the day staring out the Observation Window. He doesn't need the holographic data or the floor plans anymore. He really didn't need them in the first place. He could have run this entire scenario in his head if he had had to. Laying it out on paper and screen was just a matter of convenience, and a way to double-check ( Read more... )

Briefing III: Team Omega bring_a_sponge March 3 2007, 02:18:04 UTC
"We're going to have three separate teams on this mission, each one critical to our success."

"First up, Team Omega. Bob, Matrix, and the Bunny. You three have the most important job of all: do whatever it takes to prevent the Oil from establishing itself in Milliways.”

“There’s no way to tell how much the Oil knows, but it's infected several MiB agents, so it may have breached our data control centers. If the Oil has been able to access K's reports from the past year, then it’s going to know about this place. And that means, it’s going to know that access to Milliways means access to every universe in existence. We can’t let that happen.”

“If everything goes well, you'll have to hold the line at the Front Door until the other two teams complete their objectives. But if things go pear-shaped, we’re going to need you to provide cover fire for a retreat back to Milliways."

"If things really go bad, you may have to make the hardest decision of all: close the door and put everything and everyone in MiB into a permanent quarantine ( ... )

Matrix nods, with a grave look on his face.

"You can count on us."

"I don't doubt it for a second, Matrix. That's why you're here."

"Anything more you need from me?"

He shakes his head.

"No. I'm good."

Bob looks alarmed. He hadn't been told about the quarantine option. He's not sure he's prepared to make that leap.

"I know how you're feeling, Bob. I'm sorry to have to put that weight on your shoulders."

"I honestly don't think it's going to come to that, but we have to consider the worst case scenario. Just in case."

Bob takes a deep breath and nods. "Alright."

"Couple of things."

The bunny puffs on his cigar.

"How can we tell if someone has been infected? Cause, I don't wanna fry someone who's just tryin' ta get to safety, or let one of you guys back in if you're infected, right?"

Puff puff.

"Also, no worry bout all that closin the door. If the situation looks like it's gone to hell, I'll take care of it."

"Normally, you'd have a hell of a time. The Oil can be almost undetectable. But in battle conditions like this, you can't miss it."

"If nothing else, their eyes will be jet black, no pupils. But more likely the Oil will be spread out, using the host's body strictly to steady itself while it throws out ropes of Oil to strike at anyone within reach."

Zed brings up the photograph of John Fox again, then moves to a later picture. You can barely see the man anymore, only a mass of shifting Oil. It looks a lot like the icon.

As for the Bunny's comment about the Door, Zed looks at him for a moment, and then nods firmly with a deadly serious look in his eye.

The Bunny nods back.

"Will killin' the oil hurt those beneath it?"

Not that he cares.

Zed sighs. "Pretty much guaranteed. I wish there was something I could do about that, but our best intel so far says there's not."

"We needed more time to find a cure. We didn't get it. So now we have to play the hand we've been dealt."

"Can it live without a host?"

Always take the easy way out,huh Bunny?

"Yes. Killing the host is no guarantee the Oil won't survive. You need to hit it hard and directly with an incendiary strike, preferably along with an explosive concussion."

"Like Krycek says, if the host goes down, the Oil will try to find another host. We're fairly certain it can't infect cybernetic lifeforms, but if I were you, I wouldn't take the chance."

The Bunny nods and taps his flamethrower.

"Burn hard, burn often. Got it."

Pause.

"Any last ditch weapons?"

"Got anything particular in mind?"

"The armory will be right at the Door. Somebody could toss you something if you need it. Grenades, other explosives, they'd probably be your best bet."
