10 Day Torvill and Dean Challenge: Day 1

Aug 27, 2010 11:43

Saw this going round Tumblr but in a bid to avoid joining yet another social networking type site, I'm going to put my challenge up here and then link it to Twitter for tweeps who might be interested :)

Day 1:  Why do you love Torvill and Dean?

I love them because they're normal. I don't do hyped up celebs and gossip mags and A-list celebs spending millions on things they probably don't need, I support people because I admire them for who they are as people and not just what they are good at doing. If these people happen to be in the public eye as well then so be it.

Jayne and Chris are bloody good skaters. They wouldn't have won British, European, Olympic, World and Professional Gold medals and spent years touring the world to millions of spectators if they weren't. But it's the way they skate, the pictures they paint within their skating and the way they have a passion for what they do that makes them who they are too. I only really 'get' skating because I get their skating and I can then translate that when I watch others, but they make the revolutionary and innovative seem normal. Music tells a story so if you're skating to music then you make your skating tell the story that the music tells. Of course. And yet no-one really did until Jayne and Chris did in the early 1980s.

As people they are normal too. They're shy, they're funny, they're warm, they're caring, they're parents.....I've seen countless interviews with them and was lucky enough to meet them in Manchester after the DOI tour this year and they are regular people who after all these years still seem surprised that anyone actually watches what they do and likes what they do. To hear them talk about skating and choreography is wonderful and to watch them they have their own little world. Even when they're not skating, they're just them. Jayne and Chris. And they're amazing.
