TWO-FOLD POST: UPDATE AND MAYBE FIC PROMPTS?

Sep 21, 2011 18:34

This week (or this month, really) has been crazy. School has been a nightmare and I've had technology issues FROM HELL. Seriously, if those Winchester boys or The Ghostbusters (um, like the actual Ghostbusters, not the dudes with the same names from Supernatural) existed outside of fiction, they would have been promptly called. (Who am I kidding? ( Read more... )

Betsy, it turns out, looks a lot like Kelso. She’s tall and pretty with a wide smile and a loud laugh. Hyde would take bets that she’s going to break a lot of hearts when she gets older.

He wishes her a quick, “Happy birthday, kiddo!” and hands her a sloppily wrapped gift. She thanks him, even though he gets the feeling that she’s not exactly sure who he is; probably because the last time he saw her she was still learning how to talk.

He walks around in search of a beer, tripping over balloons and streamers as he makes his way through the crowd of people. He spots Eric and Donna in a corner, nods at them as he passes. Eric nods back, but Donna is too preoccupied with their daughter, Katherine, who is busy licking frosting off of her fingers. Hyde’s watching Donna struggle to keep the girl still while she wipes a napkin over her face, when he feels somebody press a cold drink into his hand.

“Here, looks like you could use this.”

And there she is. Jackie Burkhart, all grown up. Her hair is shorter and her dress is tighter, but other than that, she looks the same.

“Jackie, hey.” He looks down at his fingers wrapped around the bottle of beer. “Uh, thanks.”

“That’s the last one,” she says, tugging it back and taking a sip. “So, we’re sharing. Okay?”

Hyde is pretty sure he doesn’t ever remember Jackie even drinking beer, let alone sharing one (or sharing anything, really), but he just shrugs in agreement.

“How’ve you been, Steven?”

He smiles. Besides Red and Kitty, nobody else has called him Steven in years. (He dated a girl a few months ago who had made it a habit to call him Stevie whenever she wanted a favor. Or when they were in bed. It didn’t last.)

“I’m good,” he says. And when she passes the bottle back to him, he makes a note to look for any new rings on her fingers. He doesn’t see any, but he still asks, “What about you? And, uh, what’s his name? Dan?”

Jackie makes a face. “Who?”

“No, I just thought you were engaged or something.”

Hyde finishes off the beer and gives her a sort-of-but-not-really-apologetic grin.

“Oh,” she says. She waves her hand and nods her head, curls bouncing against her shoulders. “Doug. Yeah, that didn’t work out.”

“Hmm.”

“Don’t judge me, Steven.”

Hyde laughs.

“What about you?” she asks. She narrows her eyes at him. “What lucky lady has the pleasure of coming home to you every night?” Her voice takes on a semi-disgusted tone as she adds, “Besides some stripper from ten years ago.”

He looks at her like she’s crazy and it makes her smirk at him.

“Uh, no one?” he offers.

“Good,” she says.

“Good?”

Hyde lifts an eyebrow and Jackie lets out a small snort, rolls her eyes.

“Oh, please. Don’t flatter yourself, Steven,” she says. She pulls at a non-existent wrinkle on her dress and looks down at the floor, then back up at him. “God, as if I wasted any time thinking about you or whatever tramp with frosted highlights in jean cut-offs that you picked up with a six-pack while you were pumping gas.”

“Wow. That was really specific.”

She shoves at him, but she’s smiling. “Shut up.”

Betsy comes bounding over then, a small package clenched tightly in her fingers. She has a huge, excited smile on her face and makes Hyde think of him, Eric and Kelso playing with a Batman action figures in the Formans’ basement.

“Aunt Jackie!” she exclaims, throwing her arms around Jackie’s neck. “Thank you so much for the earrings. Dad said I couldn’t get my ears pierced, but now he’s going to have to let me.”

“Oh, you’re welcome, Bets. Happy birthday!”

After Betsy runs over to her dad, probably begging to be taken to have her ears pierced right this second, so she can wear Jackie’s gift (Hyde got her a Bon Jovi cassette tape, which she doesn’t seem nearly as excited about), Hyde nudges Jackie with his elbow.

“Aunt Jackie?” he asks.

“Mmm,” she says, nodding. She tips her head in Betsy and Kelso’s direction. “They grow up fast, huh?”

“Yeah.”

They all grow up fast.
