Prompt: #14 Fruitcake at 12days_of_clois
Category: Lois & Clark, the New Adventures of Superman
Rating: G
Word Count: 711
Summary: Lois & Clark spend Christmas day together.
Spoilers: Set the day after 2x09 Season's Greedings.
Author's Notes: I'm hoping this will be enjoyable for some of you at least!! I will admit that this was written at the last minute, but I have an excuse. My computer is sick with a virus and my computer whiz brother couldn't come for Christmas because of all the snow. Sharing a computer that's in a kitchen with 5 other people does not make a happy muse. But at least I have one to work on!! Anyway, I really need to watch more Lois & Clark episodes. This is un-beta'd so please excuse any mistakes.

Merry Christmas!! =D

Fruitcake

Clark Kent stared at the Superman suit he had shrugged out of and wondered how he would explain himself. It shouldn’t be too difficult. His parents had been understanding when he explained that Lois was all alone this Christmas and he didn’t want that. Of course, there were a few covered giggles from the other end of the phone.

Offering to make brunch and spend Christmas day with Lois had been a snap decision. Last night’s dinner had turned into comfortable companionship on the couch while watching It’s a Wonderful Life. Promising brunch seemed to be a safe place to start from. The Kents were early risers and popping in for Christmas morning and presents had been fairly simple. Of course there were quite a few sly looks passed between Jonathan and Martha before he left.

A quiet knock on the door broke him out of his reverie spurred him into action. Quickly he hid his suits and the other bits of untidiness around the apartment in super speed before opening the door.

Lois grinned at him, eyes sparkling beneath her white hat. “Hey,” she said softly. Then she cleared her throat and thrust a bag into his hands. “Here, I thought we might need these later.” Then she stepped inside and took off her hat and gloves.

Clark examined the contents of the bag. “Board games?”

“Yep, I thought we might enjoy playing them while we watched whatever specials are on today.”

“Sounds like fun. We haven’t played board games since…the honeymoon suite, right?”

She nodded. Leaving behind her coat on the rail, she strode into his kitchen. “So…what’re we doing for brunch?”

“Well, if you’re in the mood, I was thinking I could whip up some pancakes. And then we could brew some coffee or tea or grab orange juice out of the fridge or whatever. I have some fruit in the basket behind you.”

“That sounds delicious, Clark. I’m thinking coffee sounds wonderful about now…it’s in this cupboard, right?”

He nodded and began mixing up the pancake batter. They chatted for a while before Lois noticed his oven light.

“Are you baking something?” she asked, trying to peer into the oven without letting all the heat out.

“Oh! I’d forgotten about that. It’s fruitcake.”

Lois wrinkled her nose. “Fruitcake? You mean people actually make that stuff? On purpose?”

“I take it you’re not a fan?”

“Sure I’m a fan. I’m a fan of sending it to people I don’t like and chucking it in the garbage when they send it back.”

Clark shook his head. “Lois, you haven’t lived until you’ve tasted the Kents’ Christmas Fruitcake.”

“And why’s that?”

“Well, we have a secret ingredient,” he answered, casually flipping a pancake onto a stack of cooked ones.

“And what might that be?”

“I can’t tell you that unless you’re a Kent. Family secrets and all.”

“Then maybe I’ll have to become a Kent to find out,” she blurted without thinking. Her cheeks reddened slightly and she forked a pancake off the plate and took a bite.

Clark pretended not to hear her last comment. “I do hope you’ll try a bite though, it’s been passed down in my family for generations. My mom and I make it every Christmas…when I’m not snowed in, of course.”

“Then for you, I’ll try a piece.”

They finished their brunch around the same time Clark pulled the fruitcake out of the oven. Lois grudgingly accepted a small slice and took a bite.

“Wow, that’s not bad,” she exclaimed.

“Thought you might like it,” Clark said, popping a warm piece into his mouth.

“Thank you, Clark.”

”For what?”

“Everything. For eating my cooking yesterday and not going to your parents. You’re the best. When are you going to your parents?”

“In a day or two, I think. Hey, I think White Christmas is on in a few minutes. Which game do you think we should play?”

“I’m thinking Scrabble, actually.”

He groaned, remembering the last time they played. “All right, but you can’t use ‘chumpy’ again.”

“I make no promises unless you have a decent dictionary.”

“I’m sure I can find one somewhere around here….”

They grinned at each other and Clark hoped that next Christmas would be as special as this one.
