Running his hands down his face in an effort to drag the stress from his mind Takanori gave a resigned sigh as his hands fell back to the keyboard. The empty glass beside his laptop was looking more and more tempting with each passing second.

Glancing over the document on screen he tapped the delete button tiredly until the paragraph he had just written disappeared. He hated doing this. It was always so hard trying to find the right way to word things. Maybe he was being pedantic; maybe he was making this whole thing harder than it should be. But then again wording was everything. One misused noun or ill chosen verb and god knows what the consequences would be.

He had to be succinct, but this wasn’t something that Takanori could just explain plainly. There were too many layers to what he needed to communicate and too great a need for discretion. Holding his fingers over the keys Takanori felt his hand twitch towards the glass. Maybe just one more shot and then he’d finish for the night.

Before the decision to succumb to the temptation had fully formed in his mind, Takanori’s left hand had already sought out the draw by his knee and pulled it open. Reaching in Takanori grasped the small glass bottle of sake that he’d hidden there earlier that morning. A moment later and he was throwing back his third shot in the last hour, relishing the sharp burn as the alcohol hit the back of his throat. The gentle buzz that reverberated through his body was welcome as he felt his blood warm.

Screwing the lid back on tightly he slipped the bottle back in its place next to the half drunk bottle of scotch and flask of vodka that also lay hidden in his desk. For a second he paused and started down at the bottles he hid so shamefully. Was this what he had stooped to?

Only three years ago he had been a social drinker, only indulging in a drink when out with friends, but now...

Takanori hung his head at the thought of what he had become. There was no point in denying it no matter how tempting it was to sweep it all under the rug. There was no escaping how far he’d fallen, not when he had various spirits hidden around his home and office, ready if he ever needed a swig of something to mute the stress or drown the niggling thoughts and guilt that danced around his mind.

He was an alcoholic no two ways about it, but he couldn’t bring himself to even consider drying out. Not with the state his life was currently in. Or at least that’s how he justified it all to himself. Life was not as easy or guilt free as it had been in the past. But there was no way out of the hole Takanori’s choices had dug for him, except to numb the pain with poison.

Suddenly the door swung open and Yuu strode in. Reflexively Takanori hid the glass that was still in his hand beneath his desk, between his legs, hoping that his employer hadn’t seen it. Watching Yuu move across the room he felt a now familiar ache in his chest and desire to down the last of the spirits hidden in his desk filled him.

‘Ruki, I need you to bring me Reita’s file.’ Yuu’s tone was short and clipped as he continued through to double doors that lead to his own office.

‘Yes Sir.’

Waiting until Yuu had closed his office doors behind him Takanori slipped the glass into the draw, fitting it snugly between the scotch and vodka. Before closing it he paused staring at the bottles, struggling with the thirst Yuu’s presence had incited in him. Closing his eyes he slammed the draw shut, turning back to the laptop in front of him. He could feel a tremble of exhaustion take over his hands as he saved the report he had been working on. It was getting harder to resist the urge to drown himself feelings. It was getting harder to do his job, but he had no choice but to suck it up and move on.

Takanori brought up the company’s file catalogue up with practised ease, ignoring the temptation in the back of his mind. As PA to the Malingard’s Director Takanori held the keys to the vault, so to speak. He couldn’t let the company down. He couldn’t let Yuu down. So as far as anyone else was concerned there was nothing wrong with Takanori.

Entering the agent alias into the database Takanori waited for the computer to come up with the ID number. It would have been easier if files were stored by alias but the sheer number of employees made the idea impractical. ID serial numbers were much simpler to use and for Takanori a serial number alone could tell him more than enough about an agent.

Once the computer had finished searching its memory banks Reita’s ID Serial number appeared on screen. Studying the sequence Takanori felt corner of his mouth twitch. So this was what Yuu was planning. Takanori’s unrivalled knowledge of the ID serial number system made it near impossible for Yuu to hide any of his plans from the young PA. He was the Gate Keeper after all, Guardian of Malingard’s secrets.

Memorising the sequence Takanori left his office and approached the file room down the hall. A password and swipe card later and he was inside, surrounded by wall to wall shelving filled with hard copies of personnel files.

Nowadays most companies stored everything electronically, but Yuu seemed to hold a degree of distrust towards computer databases. He felt they were too easy to manipulate and change for someone that knew what they were doing. They were too unpredictable in the way that information was never really completely deleted. There were always some binary fragments that were left behind in the system for people to find. He like the permanency burning a file had over just hitting the delete key.

Following the ID numbers Takanori found the shelf he wanted and started flipping through the files, counting through the digits until he reached the number he was looking for.
 08T47947 - Akira ‘Reita’ Suzuki.

Pulling the folder from its place on the shelf, Takanori made his way back to Yuu’s office. As he stood in front of the door to Yuu’s office Takanori took a moment to compose himself, shaking the unease from his hands before entering.

‘I’ve got the file you wanted sir.’

Yuu was seated at his computer, chin resting on the heel of hand as he scrolled through a document.

‘Thank you Ruki.’ he said dismissively, his attention not wavering for the screen. Yuu was not known for his compassion or affection. ‘Have a look at it and tell me what you think.’

Such a request was not out of the ordinary for Takanori. As Yuu’s assistant he’d gotten used to the older man bouncing ideas of him. Reita’s ID number alone had already given Takanori some insight into what Yuu was planning, so there was not need to ask what the Director wanted to know.

Opening the folder Takanori flipped through the stapled documents, skimming over the information briefly before setting the folder down on his boss’ desk. Yuu drew back from his computer and looked at Takanori for the first time all day. Takanori felt his hands being to tremble again under Yuu’s scrutiny and quickly clasped his hands behind his back.

‘So?’

‘Not bad, but I’m not sure if he’s ready for the program.’

‘Really?’ Yuu quirked his eyebrow patronisingly.

Takanori knew before he even spoke that Yuu had already made up his mind about Reita. He wouldn’t have bothered asking for the file if he hadn’t.

‘It’s true he meets the core requirements,’ Takanori conceded, he couldn’t argue with the numbers, ‘but his background is concerning.’

‘you mean his education?’

‘yes. That and other things.’

‘You may be right, Ruki, but I’ve got a hole I need filled. And depending on how Reita goes with today’s assignment I want him to fill it.’

Takanori angled his head briefly to acknowledge that his employer was right to look for a replacement, but the expression on his face questioned the wisdom in choosing someone like Reita for the job. Takanori had had enough experience with the program to understand the kind of person that was needed and he doubted that Reita was that kind of person. For the sake of discretion Yuu could not take the selection of program members lightly, one miss-appointed member and the whole thing would blow up in his face. Takanori could not allow the at times hard headed Director to take such risks with the company.

‘You think it’d be a mistake?’

‘that’s not for me to say-‘

‘but you’re thinking it.’ Takanori flinched internally. He hated how well Yuu could read him. It terrified him that Yuu might know more than he let on about Takanori.

‘How about this?’ Yuu proposed after a moment pause. ‘I give him to you for a month to work with. If you still think he’s not what I need then I won’t move him.’
