Apparently, I've affronted people across fandoms with my opinion that male rape =/= slash. Further, apparently, a story that contains male rape cannot possibly be gen, because there's M/M sex involved (because, apparently, the "consensual" part of "relationship" need not apply). Any M/M sex, consensual or rape, is slash

I've wondered this myself. I think I got sucked into it by the sheer prevalence of it in the fandom. I didn't really have a strong feeling against it. I'd seen a few RPF fics in other fandoms and just wasn't interested at all. It wasn't that long ago, though, that I never in a zillion years imagined I'd ever read fanfic, and then I did. I never in a zillion years imagined I'd read explicit sex scenes in anything, and then I did, and here I am. hehe Then the RPS thing came along, and I read some of it partly for grins to see what it was about, and there were just some really wonderful stories out there (just as in all fanfic), and I got sucked into it. Part of it was the prevalence of it, and it was very easy to find some really awesome stories.
I think that RPS has its own canon and I have no clue at all how or why or when it seems like everyone in fandom decides "this is canon" and then it is. hehe How does that even happen? I haven't a clue, but I wasn't in on that, and yet I know when a story (AU or otherwise) has the characters out of character even though I know there are no real characters. It's like somehow fandom decided who the characters of Jensen and Jared would be and whether the story is AU or not, there are certain conventions that seem to be followed...or something.
I think RPF and RPS have been around for a *long* time, but I was not as aware of it before. I think it's very prevalent in bandom (which I also had never heard of until fairly recently). Heck, I have even read Eric Kripke/Tim Kring (or whatever is the name of the guy from Heroes *g*). I belong to a Bible slash community. It's not very active, but people do write slash stories about Bible characters. *g* I wouldn't be surprised to find that there's slash written about sports figures as well.
I also agree with switch842 below (ETA: I mean above *g*). I've never really read RPS in any other fandom, but in the SPN fandom, it works for me. I don't know why. I suppose that now that I know that RPS *can* be good (as in good stories that I like hehe), I'll be more open to it in other fandoms. But...I can watch Michael Shanks and RDA together in behind-the-scenes stuff and marvel that they have the same chemistry together that they do as their characters, but I can't imagine being interested in reading RPS about them. Eeep. OTOH, I'll at least check it out in other fandoms if it's around.
