I'm pretty sure he was contracted, although I only know absolutely certain about Pauley's 2-year contract. I just thought it was really odd he wasn't shown in the teaser.

Tim's the one they've chosen for the "might be in danger" role this year. Kinda like how last season we spent the last few weeks of hiatus thinking Tony'd been shot? And the year before that it was Jackson, Mike, and/or Tony in trouble. The year before that, it was Ziva. In the immediate aftermath, Tim is more than likely (my conclusion based on what we've been told so far) injured, but Sean is some of the behind the scenes pics that Pauley's tweeted for episodes after the premier. Tim might not be fine immediately afterward, but he is fine as the season moves forward.

I kind of figured they would make Tim injured at the start. They can't all come out of that unscathed. In fact, had they not shown that brief clip of Ducky and Palmer beforehand I would have been concerned about them too.

I agree with the concern about going down the road of Tiva. I don't mind fandom doing their thing with the couple, but it would be completely out of place on the show. Not to mention it would violate one of Gibbs' rules, and Tony is a stickler for adhering to those rules.
