So, I started up my two new classes this morning. I open up my IT100 workbook, hoping against hope that our first lab is going to be something at least mildly interesting

Vista? wtf? My computer came with Vista, and it was nothing but problems. I switched to Windows 7 ASAP. (I got a student discount, so it was only $20, or I don't know what I would have done.)
Yeah, see, that's what I'm thinking. I tried Vista once, for about two days, and I couldn't get back to XP fast enough. I haven't upgraded to 7, because I've spent so long getting my machine exactly the way I like it, and I don't want to go screwing around with things.
I swear, I'd better not be marked down for having better taste in OS than the guy that wrote this stupid book.
It's stuff like this that always kept me from taking the design/coding classes that my family was always telling me to take. What's the point of taking the low-level classes when I know they're going to teach the subject material wrong (the coding classes I've found still start with html 3 even though it's about 10 years out of date), and I also know that I'm going to do it right whether they like it or not, and I'll end up flunking.
That just doesn't sound very fun or educational to me.
HTML 3??? The only programming classes I took waaaay back in college proved to be similarly useless. I basically self-taught myself anything that I actually use on a day-to-day basis as a web designer/developer.
Yeah, that's what I did, too. And then my sister-in-law started taking some design classes, and she would come over and have me help her with her homework sometimes. And I tried, I really did, but when I got to the part where they were telling her to use tags and set everything up in tables... I slammed the book closed and told her I couldn't do it, and I knew I'd never be able to take those classes myself. Why the hell would they teach people to do it wrong, and then have to go back two semesters later and correct it all? Why not just teach it right in the first place?
If there is, I've not been told about it. Actually, my advisor specifically recommended it when she found out how much time I've spent working in IT, because she thought it would be easy. The irony is that the first page of the book says that people who've worked in IT shouldn't be allowed to take this class at all, because "hot shots" intimidate the n00bs.
When I think of it that way, maybe this might be fun after all. :D
Yeah. Vista. Now, Windows7 I could see them recommending, but requiring? If they intend to teach us how to operate computers that run only one specific OS, and a crappy one at that, then they're doing it seriously wrong.
I think I'd have had to lead a full-on mutiny for that one. :D
As it is, I left a comment in the questions forum. Someone else asked if it had to be Vista, because they have Windows7 on their main computer and Vista on their laptop, and they're willing to switch if they have to. Me? I said, "I'm running a highly tweaked and modded XP build, and I'm not thrilled with the idea of installing Vista on any machine I own."
I've decided that I'm going to have fun with this class, no matter how boring. One of our assignments this week is to take a screenshot of our desktop, so I kind spent a few hours dressing mine up a bit more than I usually do. Can't wait to see how she reacts to it. :D
