Did you think I stopped blogging to show solidarity with the TV writers? Well, if it makes me look good, then, that's exactly what I was doing.
I am at ISU while you are all enjoying your weeklong Thanksgiving break. You have friends and family; I have a freezing apartment and a rash. The reason is because the PDS coordinator wanted us interns to experience a real elementary educator’s schedule as closely as possible. Thanks Cathy for the authenticity. I student teach tomorrow and Wednesday from 7:45-11:30. I am actually leaving half an hour early to catch the 11:30 Peoria Charter driving to the River Road CTA. Then yes, finally, I will be home for a splendid 96 hours. That’s 5800 minutes.
The plan is to smoke hookah Wednesday night with Rachel and, maybe, Beth. Then, Thursday, I will put on my glutton hat as I consume Thanksgiving meal with my dad’s side of the family until about 3 PM. Normally, we would journey over to my mom’s mother’s house at this point, but it has become increasingly difficult for her to play the role of hostess. She is just getting too aged. That old warhorse! As a result, Thanksgiving is canceled. Actually, we are just rescheduling it for Saturday afternoon at my house. My mom may have a few years on her, but not too many not to be able to throw a party. Later on, I am going to a club in Chicago with Christina and Rachel. Yay! It’s near boy’s town. Sunday MAY be Christmas decorations day. However, this has not been confirmed. Then, oh too quickly, I will be back at ISU.
I love how I am no closer today to figuring out my profession than I was four years ago. I do not know if teaching is right for me. I think that prophecy is being fulfilled little by little each day. I write the most creative, relevant lesson plans yet I personally feel like I lack that true teacher’s personality when I am up in front of the class. This sucks because you either have it or you do not. I can’t grow a teacher’s personality like I can grow toenails. Hopefully, I gain more insight into which direction I want my career to head into second semester. At that point, I will be a full-time fourth grade teacher (without the pay). This is the final simulation before the real deal. I may find that is the experience I needed to become the teacher I want to be. Incidentally, if I decide teaching is not for me, I will still finish the semester positively and enthusiastically. I will graduate from ISU as planned. Then, over the summer, I may enroll into some sort of creative writing or journalism class. That is an area that has piqued my interest for a long time. Or salesmanship. Or replacing Drew Carey as host of “The Price Is Right”…
By the way, as much as I hate the concept of the TV season being canceled second semester, I totally support the writers who have provoked this work stoppage. Currently, they get no money for any Internet streaming content. They want a cut of that. The studios claim the market is too young. It has not proven to be a cash cow yet. Bullshit and so what?! If a show makes nothing online, then the writers get nothing. If it does well, then so do the writers and the studios. The other issue is DVD revenues. When I bought “My Name Is Earl” season one for $20 last summer, Greg Garcia and his staff received a whopping 4 cents from me. Universal divides up the other 99.5%. The writers want another 4 cents. Think about how reasonable a request that is. They still will not even be receiving half of ONE percent of the total DVD cost at that point. How greedy are these studios? They have taken advantage of these script-writers long enough. As horrible as this strike is for the TV-hungry public, it just needs to happen. These writers are fighting a crusade that will affect a whole new generation of writers for years to come. I hope the studios quickly come to their senses. I really do not want to resort to picking up a book.
My college life is passing before my eyes. I hope to make a more conscientious effort to hang out with people. I should “lose” the phone numbers of all my ISU buddies. Then, I will have to see them face-to-face. I do not know how plausible this is, but I like the concept.
That’s enough rambling from my end. Now, it’s your turn. Sound off below!
