I have the cold of colds. Meh!
So, Friday night I did something I had not done in a long, long time: I actually went out to a different bar. And who did I go with? Grayson! Yeah, we ditched our own bar for another one. It's funny, until I started working for them, I really wasn't into the bar scene much. But when you work at one, it's different. It's like Cheers, everyone knows my name.
However, Friday night Greg's crazy (in a good way) family came and hung out at Midtown for a few hours. After, they were all going to the Monte Carlo (no shit, that really is the name) in our neighboring town to the north, Questa. For those NOT from Northern New Mexico,
Questa is tiny, a little red-necky and, to some, kind of scary. I'd spent time there when working on Daniel's farm last summer, but there's really not much there. There is, however, what most of you would call a dive bar, owned by one of Greg's cousins. The place is a trip. All drinks are served in plastic glasses and the decor features things like this this giant, life-sized, crudely-carved wooden grizzly bear, a painted mural of a vaquero, a smoke-darkened painting of a naked lady, numerous aging beer posters, and a real, working fireplace. The latter would be probably be pretentious in some places, but the building is so old that was clearly built there for warmth.
Jason pretty much begged me to go with them and I could see why. We were virtually the only Anglos is the place. Not that it mattered, for everyone is nice and we were totally treated like VIPs. I walked in with Grayson and they just waved us in, ignoring the cover. Jason and I settled on this (probably filthy?) pleather sofa and it kind of became the VIP section. We even joked about teh invisible "velvet rope." It was actually pretty fun. I even danced. I danced to Ozzy ("Crazy Train") and, the official song of Northern New Mexico "Brown-eyed Girl" (which, bizarrely, involved some strange, butt slapping dance) and a couple of other things. Oh, and in case you're wondering, it was all the same band. They play everything from cumbia to Megadeth to Prince. I cannot even explain it.
Of course, I felt like an idiot because I was wearing my
Midtown t-shirt and that really short skirt. The shirt probably earned me some strange looks (is it bad form to wear a shirt from another bar?), but the skirt got me some attention. LOL. Even Greg's possibly lesbian cousin seemed to notice. That is one really cool thing about Greg's family. They really seem to accept he and Jason as a couple. They can also drink copious amounts and get pretty wild. They're fun.
I'm hoping my cold has nothing to do with my night out, but who knows? Yesterday's shift was pretty nasty in terms of sneezing and sniffling.
